This is the first release in a three-part series that essentially amounted to the three surviving Beatles officially sanctioning the release of tracks that had been bootlegged for years. Thus, you get some of their earliest recordings as teens; the tracks they cut in Hamburg, Germany; their Decca audition tapes (which were rejected); and, finally, alternate takes and works in progress of songs that are now part of the world's consciousness. Oh, yeah, you also get "Free As a Bird," the John Lennon track the other Beatles "finished" in 1995; it's out of context in the company of some of the group's early classics. Beatlemaniacs, of course, love exploring this stuff, but the three Anthologies are hardly a place for beginners to start their explorations. --Bill Holdship

Quand cette compilation de raretés des Fab Four est sortie, en 1995, on a vu des milliers de gens faire la queue pour acheter le nouveau Beatles. Le principal motif de curiosité était "Free As A Bird", un morceau créé en studio par les trois survivants à partir d'une maquette inédite de feu John Lennon. Jamais on n'avait été aussi près d'une reformation du groupe original ! Mais cette anthologie d'inédits de 1958 ( ! ) à 1964 contient bien d'autres surprises. Outre des interviews et de nombreuses versions live, on trouve des documents émouvants comme le single artisanal des Quarry Men (le groupe de lycée de Lennon, McCartney et Harrison) et les premières maquettes des Beatles. On découvre aussi des versions alternatives de morceaux qui se révèlent sous un nouveau jour : on apprend ainsi que "And I Love Her" a d'abord été un rock ou que sept ans avant Let It Be les Beatles jouaient déjà "One After 909"... L'histoire était en marche et le plaisir était déjà là, et bien là. --Hubert Deshouse

Review no. 84. I, of course have known about this must-have Beatles 2-CD box set for years now but I've just fairly recently purchased a copy. Total of sixty tracks - many of which I didn't recognize right off hand, like "Free As A Bird", "Cayenne", the swinging "Three Cool Cats" and "One After 909" to name a few. As for the more familiar tunes, it was nice to again hear "Roll Over Beethoven", "I Want To Hold You Hand", "A Hard Day's Night", "Shout" and too many more to list here. Simply loved the informative 46-page booklet - jam packed with info and memorabilia of the Fab Four. Essential.

Don't get suckered into buying this. If these recordings had been previously rejected, it was for a good reason (yes, even if they are by the Fab Four!). Free As A Bird is a weak song and doesn't make purchasing an entire double album worthwhile. At the end of the day, it's just a way of squeezing money from unsuspecting beatlemaniacs.

This is the first 2 CD set of the three part Beatles Anthology on CD. It provides the listener with great insight into and enjoyment of the very early Beatles' work as well as a great recording of a concert they did in Sweden just as they hit true stardom in Great Britain. There is a beautiful booklet some 46 pages long with photos and information about the recordings. The wonderful thing about the Beatles Anthology CD set is that the listener and fan can hear and read about the evolution of such songs as One after 909 (which wouldn't get released for six years after the versions you will hear on this CD set). There are recordings with the Beatles using different drummers as they searched for a drummer or on one occasion when Ringo was sick and couldn't play. I would strongly recommend this and the other two Beatles Anthology CD sets for the Beatles fan who truly wants to know the evolution of the Beatles sound. A must-have!
