Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Post-Beatles, the virtues of deft song interpretation have been consistently devalued in favour of self-contained composer-performers, seldom more so than in the initial response to this sequel to Annie Lennox's triumphant solo debut, Diva. That album's gripping originals deserve acclaim, but the lush Scottish alto remains one of the most riveting pop singers of the past two decades, and this smartly chosen, meticulously arranged collection of cover versions boasts its own abundant charms in her selection of obscure gems and bona fide classics from Al Green, Procol Harum, Neil Young, the Clash, the Temptations, Paul Simon, Bob Marley, and the Blue Nile. The songs are the rightful stars here, and Lennox brings passion and nuance to a set that plays beautifully. From the cinematic heartbreak of "No More I Love Yous" to the faithful recreation of the Blue Nile's "Downtown Lights", this is ravishing pop. --Sam Sutherland

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good covers album, Jul 12 2004
By Erik (Camdenton, MO) - See all my reviews
I decided to listen to this CD because I wanted to hear some of Annie Lennox's music. I never really paid attention to her work outside of the Eurythmics, so I was surprised to like her solo work so much. Her recent performance on the Today Show blew me away. Although she didn't perform any of the songs on this album in that performance, I really liked this CD anyway. Annie makes every song her own, and I love how she blends so many styles together. She took a chance with this album and it paid off. I read in a magazine that most critics thought this album was boring. Sometimes I wonder what those critics are actually listening to. This album wasn't boring at all. It is a very passionately made album that is full of terrific songs.

I liked most of the songs here. I liked "Waiting in Vain" because I remember hearing it on that movie Serendipity. The second half of the CD is better than the first half, but overall this is a very good album. This is the first Annie Lennox album I have listened to and it definitely won't be the last.

3.0 out of 5 stars Annie's medusa doesen't hurt so much, Jul 9 2004
By Guido Antonio Di Carlo (Torino, Italy) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This time Annie Lennox is heading to cover other artists songs.
After the wonderful Diva annie stop giving us new material, prefering cover other songs.
The result is one of the best cover album i've ever heard.
Annie's only personal touch is her distinctive voice, but her genius writing is missing here.
The songs are quite good, the musical style keeps staying the same as diva , no more i love you's stands out, but nothing else (that's the reason it's not 4 or 5 stars).

Good, but nothing esensational.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best I have ever heared., Jun 28 2004
I was gifted Diva years ago by a close friend after I heared "Why" on MTV. i fell in love with the voice, the video & Annie. I was never a Eurythmics fan but "Diva" changed all that. When "Medusa" was released, I was the first in line to buy this album & it turned out to be the best album I had ever bought! "Waiting in Vain" is my No.1 single of all times. Now with "Bare" Annie is back with a bang & I bought it within few hours of it hitting the music stores.
This album is a must buy for all music lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Among her best work
More often than not, there are two types of cover tunes: note by note recreations that bring nothing new to the table, or abysmal hatchet jobs. Read more
