3.0 out of 5 stars Matter of Interpretation, Jan 10 2005
By A Customer
I have heard many great saxophonists and studied with a student of Mr. Pittel's. I find Mr. Pittel's interpretation of the instrument to be quite fascinating (constantly striving for tonal consistency throughout the horn via a different approach to embouchure). However, this form of playing does not match what I strive for in my own angle of how the saxophone should be played. This recording does seem rushed to me and I do not think it accurately displays Mr. Pittel's abilities. I highly recommend anything by Claude Delangle. I think he is quite possible the most musically, technically, and intonationally inclined present day performer. Especially check out his interpretation of Tableaux de Provence. Mr. Delangle plays the final movement about twice as fast as Mr. Pittel, and it is truly astonishing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give me a break., Jul 19 2003
By Kevin Norton (Morehead, KY USA) - See all my reviews
Everybody thus far who has reviewed this CD has basically crucified Harvey Pitel for his playing style. I even read one review who put this man below John Harle (who should just put down the saxophone permanently). Look, he may not be the likes of Eugene Rosseau or Marcel Mule (and calling himself the essential American saxophonist doesn't help him there), but this is still a good recording. The altissimo notes are a little shaky, but that doesn't diminish the overall quality of the recording. He has a good sense of tuning, nice articulations, and (best of all) good breath and volume control. Leave the man alone!

2.0 out of 5 stars Try Again..., April 16 2003
By A Customer
As stated elsewhere here, there are performance flaws within. Most annoying are the pronounced pitch problems in altisimo passages on the Dahl. It ain't easy, but if one can't pull it off, better to program something else instead. The pianist seems to 'Clam' now and then also.
Better recordings exist of these pieces.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice selections, not so great performance
This CD contains a great selection of standards from the saxophone repertoire. Although the selection of music is very good, the actual performance is not so great. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Fine content, lackluster performance
Pittel's attempt to create a "benchmark" classical saxophone record is laudable. The pieces on the album are standards: Creston's Sonata, Ibert's Camera, Maurice's... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars great reference
this cd, i think, should be used as nothing more than a source of reference recordings for aspiring saxophonists and saxophonists preparing for performances of the pieces... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Recording!
If I had a friend who had never heard of classical saxophone music, this is where I would start. Every piece on the CD benefits from Pittel's playing and musicianship. Read more
