4.0 out of 5 stars A different view of Bax, July 10 2006
By captain cuttle (Vancouver, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This performance is generally typical of the Naxos series which offers a view of Bax through new contact lenses - architectural lines and detail clearer than ever before. This is achieved by a combination of analytical recording - you feel as if you're amongst the orchestra - and the conductor's feel for line. To an extent this is refreshing if you've overdosed on the celtic gauze that wraps most Bax performances, but I have to admit I'd ideally prefer something between this and the Bryden Thomson approach in the old Chandos series.
I don't agree with some of the pro reviewers that the Chandos recordings are intrinsically better than these. Chandos sound is edgy through high quality audio equipment whereas these Naxos discs sound more natural. It's just that the mikes are close. I can even hear pages turning and chairs creaking. However at this price, who can complain? And in general these Lloyd-Jones performances are a match for Thomson or the old Lyrita set.
