--Jim Emerson

Review

Behold the horror epic that started the Krueger craze and the Elm Street franchise. This low-budget effort not only put frightmaster Wes Craven on the map, but it slashed new life into the dying horror genre. Nightmare on Elm Street is a surreal and artistic experiment in dark and bloody filmmaking, levitating above the senseless gorefests seen in Friday the 13th. Built upon a brilliant premise, Elm Street became known as a near-masterpiece of post-'70s terror that skillfully blurred the line between reality and fantasy. The character of Freddy Kreuger instantly joined the ranks of infamous modern horror villains. While Jason Vorhees and Michael Myers were steadfast and robotic, Freddy was a humorous sadist who refused to hide behind a mask. The dreamscape and surreal atmosphere that Craven creates is a key reason why A Nightmare on Elm Street remains so haunting to this day. Cinematographer Jacques Haitkin knows how to use shadow and light to his advantage, most notably in the trippy and eerie basement scenes and the moment in which a character is dragged across the ceiling. For a movie with a budget just over $1 million, Elm Street possesses a surprisingly stylish look; even the low-grade special effects manage to be effective. The film is tailor-made for those who like their gore coupled with smart and inventive ideas, a rarity in the horror genre. ~ Adam Goldberg, All Movie Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars A film you shouldn't watch before bed, Nov 25 2009
By Frances L. Arsenault "lover of literature" (Nanaimo, BC, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had never heard or seen this film before; except for The Simpsons' spoof of it, and I find information on the film and finally watched on YouTube and I couldn't take my eyes off it. I did get a little scare, but I know it is only a movie (I am not stupid!), and to you Johnny Depp fans like I am, this is his first film.

The film (as you all know) starts with 15-year-old Nancy Thompson (I think) suffering from violent nightmares about a badly burned man wearing a glove with knives on each finger. She quickly learns that this man -- a child murderer named Freddy Krueger is also terrorizing the dreams of her friend Tina, her boyfriend Rod and her (Nancy's) boyfriend, Glen. As they begin to die one by one in their sleep, Nancy learns from her mother, that years ago, the parents of Elm Street burned Krueger alive, by leaving a trial of gasoline to the his bolier room; and also splashing the gas around the place. And now Freddy's ghost is back to claim their children's lives as revenge! As the teenagers of Elm Street fight to stay awake, Nancy must save their lives and her own by bringing Freddy out of their dreams and back into the real world to destroy him forever.

The was film was horror film success, that four sequels were maded; but because of the negative reviews...I am not going to watch them. So my last word is that this film a excellent scare-fest, and I would advise you of naive nature like me NOT to watch it before bed (*evil laughter*).

5.0 out of 5 stars Good night, Sleep tight, Don't let Freddy Kreuger bite!, July 14 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Nightmare on Elm Street (VHS Tape)
I must say that this is by far the most...Incredible thing I have ever seen!!! A lot of people didn't approve of it(when I was 6 I didn't approve of it but more on that later.) Because this movie had a low body count.(Find out wich one did on www.freddyvsjason.com) But even thought the BC was low, the Blood Count was phenomenal. Remember the scene where whatsherface was wrapped in that sheet with blood all around it? what about when that dude got pulled through the bed?(I hate to admit it but to make a long story short I didn't sleep in my bed till the next time I saw it!) But I wont spoil the movie for you 'First Timers'. But If you are a first timer, watch this movie by yourself in the middle of the night, door locked, lights off, (And maybe some rubber pants and a blanket! If you think it's that scary) Good night, Sleep tight, Don't let Freddy Kreuger bite!
