Review

If one thought the backlash against Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan was unwarranted, then it would be best to channel those negative feelings toward Jean-Jacques Annaud's crude, poorly cast World War II drama. Using Ryan as a primer for faux jingoistic wartime clichs, the film never makes the brutality of Stalingrad palpable on any sensible level, merely wallowing in mediocrity from one ill-conceived scene to the next. The casting is equally baffling, with Brits Jude Law and Joseph Fiennes playing Russians and all-American Ed Harris playing a German. The film may have paid off if any actor were properly suited to his role. As it is, the leads are not nearly commanding enough to convince as battle soldiers, and Harris fails to make his ruthless sniper much more than a stock villain. A few scenes have requisite suspense, but are quickly undone by the director's unsteady hand and the silly screenplay, which makes it nearly impossible to comprehend the characters' actions. The movie is reportedly the highest-budgeted European feature in history, due to its lengthy, violent scenes of combat, which also seem directly inspired by Spielberg's picture. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide

Synopsis

A turning point in 20th century war history is the focus of this fact-based account of the 1942-1943 battle of Stalingrad, in which the Germans were finally defeated by Russian influence -- one of the bloodiest battles in World War II history. The film stars Jude Law as Vassili, a marksman from the Urals who is transported to Stalingrad in 1942, and a master German sniper, Major Koenig (Ed Harris). Koenig, an expert German sniper, is determined to eliminate his formidable opponent by any means necessary; meanwhile, Vassili has joined forces with Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), a young Russian political adversary, who is impressed by Vassili's skills and raises his profile in the Soviet Union. Both Vassili and Danilov become involved with Tanya (Rachel Weisz), whose Jewish parents have been captured by the Germans and have forced her to take up with the men on a sniper expedition. Koenig and Vassili begin to develop traps for each other, until fate inevitably must bring the two sharpshooters together. This large-scale production, financed mostly by Teuton companies, also features Bob Hoskins as Nikita Krushchev and Ron Perlman as an aging Russian sniper. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide

1.0 out of 5 stars way too depressing, Oct 24 2007
By falcon "disdressed12" (canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Enemy at the Gates is set during ww2 during the Battle for
Stallingrad. It is the story of a young Russian sharpshooter named
Vassili and his battle with A German sniper known as Konig sent to
assassinate him .Jude Law plays Vassilli, while Ed Harris plays the
German sniper,Konig.Vassilli is quickly coming to fame for the amount
of Germans he has shot and killed, which is leading to low morale of the
German troops. So,Konig has been sent to kill Vassili and raise the
moral of the German troops.there is more going on here but this is the
main thrust of the story. The movie is exceptionally bleak in every
aspect and is very hard to watch.there is an air of depression
throughout the movie.i will definitely not watch this movie again. 1/5

3.0 out of 5 stars Has its good and bad points, Nov 14 2004

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I was left with mixed feelings about this movie; I felt that a fairly good job was done at recreating the feel of Stalingrad during the seige--the chaos, desperation, brutality and inhumanity. War is shown for what it is: insanity and a useless waste of life. But on the other hand, the story was a bit lame with the romance and the jealousy and all that. And yes, the dialogue was pretty questionable, as well. Not the great film that I was led to believe that it was, but not all that bad, either.

4.0 out of 5 stars ETMR - Enemy at the Gates, Jul 19 2004
By Benjamin Seeberger (Emerald Hills, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
1. Humanity: Stalingrad, with its torn buildings, dismal skyscapes, and eternal battles of gunfire, is almost more important than the sniper Vassily, the main protagonist. What does the landscape of the city tell you about the passions of men?

2. Implications: This film tries to pay credence to both the Russians and the Germans, while trying to play at their faults as well. It appears, however, that the film is still in favor of the Allies, from the distasteful humor in Major Konig toward his work, the ominous rows of sleek black German battle tanks, and the hopeful dancing of the Russian soldiers who knew they were to die. How does this movie paint the German personality? Do you think it is a valid statement?

3. Evolution: Cinema has seen many, many WWII films. From the blood and dust of Saving Private Ryan, to the practical jokes and youthfulness of The Great Escape, WWII films showcase a museum of human feelings regarding the Second Great War. Where does Enemy at the Gates fit into this grand tradition? How does it compare?

4. Realism: It's obvious the film tries to be realistic. The bloody battles and lost friends and gloomy atmosphere only emphasize and accent this theme. Yet there is a certain glee in the gun-battles, as if it were a video-game being played out. This is perceived in the cycling of snarpshooters beside Vassily the inevitable conflict between Vassily and Konig, the kill count papers, and the soap-opera love triangle between Danilov, Vassily, and Tanya. Do these elements become shortcomings, or do they flourish the film in its cinematic quest?

5. Stageplay: One of the first surprises of the film is that the Russian actors have British accents, while the Germans have German accents and speak English. How does this affect the atmosphere of the film?
