Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Just in case the name is not familiar, or the title song, Michel Legrand is the composer of the infuriatingly catchy "The Windmills of My Mind" (actually "The Windmills of My Heart" in the original French) and all the songs in Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, the charming Catherine Deneuve film musical. The material on this disc ranges from the smoky melancholy of "Je vivrai sans toi" ("I Will Live Without You") to the hyperbolic camp of "Celui-là" ("The One") but mainly hovers in the realm of anguished longing. Jessye Norman uses the material to show off the extraordinary range and flexibility of her voice, and slips between a pure, almost boyish sound, and a full-throated luxurious warble with ease. But idiomatically she may not be to everyone's taste: for the most part this is the musical territory inhabited by the Billie Holidays of this world, and Norman's technique puts her at a disadvantage. Michel Legrand in his role as pianist is another matter, however. His carefully nuanced accompaniments flow with improvisatory ease, and inspire some great moments from the bass and drums. --Warwick Thompson

Chronique amazon.fr

I Was Born In Love With You"). À noter, des titres supplémentaires - et superbes - où Legrand s'accompagne de Ron Carter à la basse et Grady Tate à la batterie. --Eric Frank

5.0 out of 5 stars They asked Elvis "Who do you sing like" - "no one", Nov 19 2002
By U. webb (United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Streisand? (whom I enjoy) Compared to Jessye Norman? Please! Legrand composed this music. It is his! He can interpret it as he pleases. They weren't attempting crossover. They were performing (enjoying) the music. Jessye Norman is magnificent. If you have quality equipment, so that you can hear all of the music, you will love this CD. "Jazz combo" isn't quite accurate to describe these artists. The SACD player "upsampled" this disc and the recording sounds very accurate and very musical. Great music deserving (requiring?) good playback equipment. One of my favorite discs.

5.0 out of 5 stars best cd ever made, April 15 2002
By Hans Beijer (Leiden Netherlands) - See all my reviews
By accident I found this cd. It was near christmas and I was looking for presents. I bought this cd as a present for myself. I love the singing of Jessye Norman and Legrand is one of the best piano players in the world. The way they arranged this material is amazing. Subtle and intense.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lush exploration of jazz literature as art song, Sep 8 2001
By A Customer
Many will view this recording as an attempt by Miss Norman to cross over into jazz literature. Yet, many of the French songs on the album are actually modern day lieder, songs of serious art. Miss Norman treats them with respect and adoration. Her phrasing and interpretation of emotions are impeccable. She may not bend as many notes as a true jazz singer, but she instead chooses to elevate Mr. Legrand's dark beauties on a new plateau of her own understanding. The ensemble work between Mr. Legrand on piano and Miss Norman is worth twice the price of the recording, a study in nuance and partnership. Miss Norman will become a legend in our time, and this recording will be one of her many monuments. Bravo.
