Product Description

From Amazon.com

A tough but wary edge often lurks beneath the surface of Lorrie Morgan's sweet, arresting country soprano. That should be no surprise, really: with three failed marriages behind her (including a tragic union with the late singer Keith Whitley), Morgan is a battle-weary, road-tested survivor who has no doubt lived through what younger and callower-sounding songstresses merely sing about. Yet Morgan's vocal resolve often wages an inner war with her abiding vulnerability and longing, which is what makes her so utterly powerful and believable on distraught confessionals like the bitter "Good As I Was to You" and her magnificent reprise of Tammy Wynette's lament "Another Lonely Song." An added treat is her fervent live version of Sarah McLachlan's "Angel." Morgan is every bit as incisive on a hard-edged shuffle like "Trainwreck of Emotion" (her debut 1988 single, which is included here on CD for the first time) as on a spirited romantic plea like "We Both Walk." There are a few clunkers on this 17-song hodgepodge of old and previously unreleased material that masquerades as a "greatest hits" package--worst of the worst is "Maybe Not Tonight," a gooey, mismatched duet with Sammy Kershaw. Still, the overall effect of To Get to You is to remind us in no uncertain terms what an expressive and perennially underrated singer Morgan is. --Bob Allen

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting compilation, Jun 6 2004
This compilation was released in 2000, and I suppose it was to fulfill her contract with BNA. Only 5 years before did they release the first GREATEST HITS album. TO GET TO YOU contains 5 new songs, with 12 of her hits. The new tracks are pretty good, especially the ballads. Lorrie sounds just like Tammy Wynette when she sings her song "Another Lonely Song", great song. The title track is a great ballad about love and devotion, same with "If I Cry". Her rendition of "Angel" (from a concert) is chilling. "Whoop-de-do" is not the best but it's a fun piece of fluff. There's some big hits here too, including "Good As I Was To You", "Go Away", "One of Those Nights Tonight", "Standing Tall", "We Both Walk", "Half Enough", "By My Side", "He Talks To Me", "Something In Red", and more. Overall a pretty solid compilation, and the best one out there right now for Lorrie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another incomplete collection but the best yet,
By Peter Durward Harris "Pete the music fan" (Leicester England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
There have been several compilations of Lorrie's music featuring various hits, but none of them are definitive, though this is the best yet. Among the hits included here are We both walk, Half enough, Good as I was to you, I guess you had to be there, Train wreck of emotion, Standing tall and Something in red.

Apart from the hits, this collection contains five new recordings. These include a live cover of Angel (a Sarah McLachlan song) and an excellent cover of Another lonely night, one of Tammy Wynette's less heralded classic songs. There is nobody better suited to singing Tammy's classics, as Lorrie has been divorced almost as often as Tammy. The other three new tracks are To get to you, If I cry and Whoop-de-do.

Lorrie, like me, has very eclectic musical tastes and it shows in her choice of material. Unfortunately, many people these days prefer singers to choose a particular style and stick to it. Because of that, Lorrie's determination to record a variety of material has limited her success. Unquestionably blessed with one of the finest voices in contemporary country music, Lorrie should be a bigger star than she actually is.

If you only want one collection of Lorrie's music, this is the one to choose. Many of the missing hits can be found on her CD in the RCA country legends series. I've already reviewed that and recommend it if you enjoy this and want to explore further.

4.0 out of 5 stars Morgan Serves Up A Second Helping, Sep 3 2002
By Chris S. "cscotts" (atlanta, ga United States) - See all my reviews
Lorrie Morgan's second hits compilation starts pretty much where her last one left off, including tracks left off that one('We Both Walk')as well as incorporating singles she'd since released. While there are a couple of holdovers from the previous set, there's still no 'Out Of Your Shoes', and tracks like 'Half Enough' and the new 'Whoop-De-Do' are radio trifle that do nothing more than waste her vocal talent. But when she latches on to something like Sarah McLachlan's 'Angel' or the superb Jon Randall-duet 'By My Side', it only serves to remind the listener that Morgan remains one of Nashville's most underrated vocal stylists.
