Product Description

Amazon.com essential recording

Under Klemperer, a maestro with roots in a great operatic tradition, this is a monumental, authoritative performance. From the very beginning of the Fidelio Overture, tempi are slow, deliberate, expansive: every note is important and vibrantly alive; every vocal and instrumental line stands out; there is time for poised changes and transitions. Chorus and orchestra are splendid; not only do all the soloists sing fabulously, but using all their vocal resources to bring out the character of words and music, they create real people and situations, mood and atmosphere. With a mostly German cast, even the spoken dialogue seems to aid rather than disrupt the drama. Berry is a wonderfully venomous villain, yet he sings every note accurately; Vickers, darkening his voice, makes Florestan more resigned than heroic, breathless in his ecstatic hallucination. Ludwig's voice is flawless over a huge range, warm yet gloriously radiant; she is an ideal Leonore in style, expression, and characterization. --Edith Eisler

2.0 out of 5 stars Too slowly paced...and details are almost lost, Jun 30 2004
By A Customer
This recording has many strenghts and a superlative cast of singers led by the great Klemperer. However, it suffers from the tendency of its times, decades ago, to play Beethoven's music with a slower pace than it was composed. The orchestral forces also tend to not be pointed enough to create a cohesive whole out of this beautiful opera. Moreover, the poor sound quality keeps the details from shining through, and the excessively large late-Romantic approach further contributes to this problem. There are more recent recordings which are far more enjoyable and exciting. Just try the Mackerras recording on Telarc. He doesn't have the calibre of soloists that Klemperer does, but the music is much better paced on that recording, with the orchestral details shining through and the early Romantic/late Classical qualities of the opera coming across. It's too bad that once a recording such as Klemperer's becomes the "essential" one, the newer recordings get overlooked despite their merits and improvements. Klemperer's does have magic but it's just becoming overdated, and may even sound a little boring to some listeners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, but not as good as Klemp's live recording!, May 9 2004
This is no doubt perhaps the greatest recording of Fidelio out there, but it's not as good as Klemperer's live Fidelio recording!

It has just been released on TESTAMENT and is a live mono recording from Covent Garden, 1961. After the live production they recorded the studio version. But thanks to TESTAMENT we can hear Fidelio as a real-life experience.

To tell you the truth, I was blown away by the interpretation of the TESTAMENT recording, the sound is totally amazing, (like stereo!) and you can actually hear the "underlying musical through-line" the intensity and natural beauty of the singing and orchestral playing is something else.

I'm so glad TESTAMENT released the famous-historical recording for us. I like it a lot better than Klemperer's studio version. The difference is like listening to a studio recording of Beethoven's 9th and seeing it live!
