Product Description

Chronique amazon.fr

--Marc Zisman

Album Description

Harpo doesn't sing, but he does strum a mean harp. These two albums from the '50's are popular and available again. The sound is actually romantic background music. Songs like, 'My Funny Valentine' & 'In A Sentimental Mood'. Standard jewel case. 2000 release.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem!, April 20 2004
By devotedmarxist (New Hampshire) - See all my reviews
This particular album, is a treat for Harpo fans, as well fans of jazz music. I found myself just taken in by the music, it's extremely soothing and relaxing. Harpo's virtuosity absolutely shines in the tunes. I particularly liked "Harpo Woogie", "Guardian Angel" (which Harpo wrote!), "My Blue Heaven" (which was done by Fats Domino as well as many others), and "In a Sentimental Mood". If you are looking for just Harpo solos (as in the Marx Brothers films), you won't find that here. But you will find terrific arrangements (done by Harpo's son Bill), and angelic music done by a most angelic man. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars I was disapointed, Jan 5 2003
By Jeff N (Oakdale, CA) - See all my reviews
For as long as I can remember I have loved Harpo playing his amazing harp solos in the Marx Brothers movies and Take Me Out To The Ballgame on I Love Lucy.

This CD is enjoyable but the other instruments in the Jazz band are louder than the harp at times. It is almost as if Harpo is just another player in just another 50s Jazz band.

I wanted a CD of harp solos by Harpo with his innovative, gifted, uplifting, unique style of playing popular songs, classic tunes, and classical pieces. There must be an old Harpo solo album somewhere that someone can restore. Harp solos are not unheard of. I own four of them myself.

I was so disapointed in this CD that I gave it to my roommate, but I do play it once every few months.

So, if you love 50s Jazz bands and don't care if you own a CD of Harpo harp solos, you will probably really enjoy this CD.
