Product Description

From Amazon.com

Country veteran Pam Tillis, known for hits like "Maybe It Was Memphis" and "Cleopatra, Queen of Denial," has a trilling, falsetto-tinged, little-girlish singing style that's part Tammy Wynette and part Cyndi Lauper. But on most of the cuts on 2001's Thunder & Roses, her seventh album, Tillis sounds all grown up. This time around she turns much of her attention to early midlife dilemmas like growing old ("Which Five Years"), the challenges of second marriages (a lovely ballad she cowrote called "Off-White"), and the search for untarnished love in a tarnished world (the title tune and "Please"). Occasionally--as on the starry-eyed "Please" and "Waiting On the Wind," a sappy duet with her father Mel Tillis--Tillis still sounds like a ditzy kid with hair spray on the brain. But when she grapples with meaningful issues, as she does on the despairing "It Isn't Just Raining," the coldly assessing "Be a Man," and a sassy growing-up song called "Tryin'," she hits big emotional bull's-eyes time and again. --Bob Allen

4.0 out of 5 stars Hit and Miss, Oct 30 2002
By J. M. Zuurbier (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Pam Tillis seemed to hit a rut for a while, this trend continued with her 2001 album THUNDER & ROSES. It's all touch and go basically. The album has a more polished, adult sound, than any of her other albums. While she shines on some tracks, others sound out of place. The title track, originaly done by Mindy McCready, is an emotional song she handles well. The highlight of the album however is the only song she helped pen "Off-White", a song about getting married for a second time, beautiful song. She also covers Tina Arena's "If I Didn't Love You" with a well rounded performance. There's also the duet with her father, Mel Tillis, on "Waitin On The Wind", fans have been waiting for that one for a while! Other highlights include "Which Five Years", "Please", "Jagged Hearts", but I didn't really enjoy "I'm Tryin", "Space", or "Be A Man", they seemed out of place to me. Overall Tillis fans should be pleased but its far from her best, but still worth it to hear some tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars That voice !!, Jun 24 2002

Here in South Africa we don't have any country music on the radio. The only way to find country music is to search the internet and then order it. I am not taken into any direction by the radio and only hear the country that I have on CD.
"Thunder and Roses" is one of the cd's i listen to the most.
The best tracks are Space, Tryin' and I Smile but the others are just as good. I'm looking forward to the CD from Pam Tills of her father Mel Tillis's songs and will buy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, April 18 2002
Pam Tillis' new album THUNDER AND ROSES continues to move her farther away from country and more towards the pop country sound which is more prevailant in country music these days. While not a bad thing, what this album lacks is consistency overall. While it has its shining moments (Please, If I Didnt Love You, Thunder And Roses, etc), it also falls flat on its face in other areas (Be A Man, Jagged Hearts, Space, Tryin', etc). Pam has one of the most original voices in country music, but overall her albums have been inconsistent (save her first album, Sweethearts Dance) and this only adds to that record. However when its good its good, but overall the album will leave you wondering and wanting more than it is.
