Along with Desperate Housewives, Lost was one of two breakout shows in the fall of 2004. Mixing suspense and action with a sci-fi twist, it began with a thrilling pilot episode in which a jetliner traveling from Australia to Los Angeles crashes, leaving 48 survivors on an unidentified island with no sign of civilization or hope of imminent rescue. That may sound like Gilligan's Island meets Survivor, but Lost kept viewers tuning in every Wednesday night--and spending the rest of the week speculating on Web sites--with some irresistible hooks (not to mention the beautiful women). First, there's a huge ensemble cast of no fewer than 14 regular characters, and each episode fills in some of the back story on one of them. There's a doctor; an Iraqi soldier; a has-been rock star; a fugitive from justice; a self-absorbed young woman and her brother; a lottery winner; a father and son; a Korean couple; a pregnant woman; and others. Second, there's a host of unanswered questions: What is the mysterious beast that lurks in the jungle? Why do polar bears and wild boars live there? Why has a woman been transmitting an SOS message in French from somewhere on the island for the last 16 years? Why do impossible wishes seem to come true? Are they really on a physical island, or somewhere else? What is the significance of the recurring set of numbers? And will Kate ever give up her bad-boy fixation and hook up with Jack?

Lost did have some hiccups during the first season. Some plot threads were left dangling for weeks, and the "oh, it didn't really happen" card was played too often. But the strong writing and topnotch cast kept the show a cut above most network TV offerings. The best-known actor at the time of the show's debut was Dominic Monaghan, fresh off his stint as Merry the Hobbit in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. The rest of the cast is either unknowns or "where I have I seen that face before" supporting players, including Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly, who are the closest thing to leads. Other standouts include Naveen Andrews, Terry O'Quinn (who's made a nice career out of conspiracy-themed TV shows), Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia, Yunjin Kim, Maggie Grace, and Emilie de Ravin, but there's really not a weak link in the cast. Co-created by J.J. Abrams (Alias), Lost left enough unanswered questions after its first season to keep viewers riveted for a second season. --David Horiuchi

5.0 out of 5 stars The TWIN PEAKS of the New Millenium!, Sep 6 2007
By NeuroSplicer (Freeside, in geosynchronous orbit) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Ever since the early 90's (when TV peaked with TWIN PEAKS) had I to come across such an engaging Series! Weird (in a good way), Insightful and Intelligent - and with much better luck with scheduling and ratings.

The secret in my opinion: truly SMART writing; well-ahead planed plot and characters not only interesting but also one cares about to follow week after week!
Faith and Reason, Fate and Choice, Dogma and Intuition, Nature and Nurture, Good and Evil are in a constant dynamic equilibrium, raising everyday issues under extraordinary conditions to render all the hues discernible and debatable. Come for the story, stay for the Philosophy.

If you liked the X-FILES you will appreciate the mythology been interwoven with the action (instead of mythology episodes alternating with action episodes and, thus, pretty much ruining the rhythm of the series).
If you liked TWIN PEAKS you will appreciate the skewed reality and the blurry boundaries between reality and fantasy.

Although not by much, the 1st Season was the best of the three so far. The introduction of the characters with all the serendipitous path-crossing and the unpredictability of major characters getting killed made the difference.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series; Great DVD set, Sep 29 2005
By Joseph Papparelli (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
Lost is simply a great series. This is a very character-driven show; well-written and filled with suspense. It's a show about a group people who end up on a mysterious island after their plane crashes. However, not everything is as it seems. Don't expect a run-of-the-mill show about a bunch of one-dimensional characters with nothing to do on an island; there is definitely a high level of drama and mystery mixed in. Each episode leaves you itching to watch the next. It's hard to give too many details with a show such as this, as I would not want to spoil the excellent plot.

The DVD transfer is fantastic, with the wide-screen HDTV format beautifully preserved. The sound is fantastic as well. The set is split over 7 discs; 6 for the show and 1 disc of bonus features. The bonus featues are definitely worth the watch if you're a fan. Buy this set, and I pretty much guarantee you will instantly become a rabid one (as I did.)

Well deserving of 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Addicting, Mar 12 2006
By Lindsay (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
I was upon the impression that my friend was completely insane when she told me she had watched television for four days straight. She had told me she had rented 6 four-hour DVDs at a Blockbuster and that she could not stop watching it. You see...my friend is not a big TV watcher, so when she told me this, I had to ask what in the world she was watching. When she told me it was LOST, the TV series, featuring Domenic Monaghan, I wasn't interested - I thought it was merely some boring soap opera, but, as usual, my first impressions were completely wrong. When she finally convinced me to watch it (after about three weeks, I may add), I was stunned.
You see, I'm not a very big TV watcher, but when I saw the first episode of LOST, I wanted more. Before I knew it, I had watched the second one, and then the third, and then the fourth (not wanting to admit it to my friend)...followed by the next eight. I was so addicted to the seat-binding suspense that I could not stop watching it. The actors are amazing and the plot is just so out-of-this-world fantastic. In each episode you find out a little bit more about each individual character and how they got to be on the plane that crashed, leading them to the mysterious island that they are now stranded on. I'm hoping to rent the last few episodes of Season One and then hopefully find a way to watch Season Two (because I don't think it has come out on DVD yet).
This TV series is to anyone who loves great suspense, mystery, and sheer excitement. Believe me, even if you hate TV series (because, believe me, I did), once you watch LOST you will completely change your mind. This is one TV series that should win any kind of award imaginable - it's awesome, and, most importantly, highly addicting.

-Lindsay A., 15
