Video Details

From "M" to "Rancho Notorious," from "Metropolis" to "Moonfleet," the films of Fritz Lang are an important part of the history of cinema. From his first film, "The Spiders," in 1919 to "M" and his meeting with Goebbels in 1933, the first phase of his career was set in Germany, where he returned twenty-five years later to shoot his last three films. It was during his German period that the director developed his distinctive directorial style. In "Fritz Lang: Circle of Destiny," those who knew the man and his work best reveal the secrets behind his craft. 54 minutes.

This film is one of the best 54 minute biographies of Frits Lang. It pulls no punches and covers the positives and negatives of his movie career.

The format is sound bite. One point or part of his life will be discussed by five people. Then the next part pf his life will be discussed by the same five people. It would have been more coherent if one person at a time covered his life.

Even though it is not evident from the packaging this film has English captions that you will want to activate. One third is in English one third in German and one third in French. As the cover the different films in each era they also speak that language.

My favorite part is when they tell of Fritz embellishing the story of his meeting with Goebbels in 1933 and why he left Nazi Germany.

The film is also filled with snippets of his various films.


To get more in depth you should read "Fritz Lang" by Lotte H. Eisner

but only his german films, early and last....does not discuss any of the american films such as fury, woman in the window, or the big heat.....maybe in one hour this is too much to expect, yet the write up doesn't make it clear that the american films are omitted..even so, an analysis of lang the man is detailed through discussion of his personality and behavior....the films become more of his expressions about life and fate than anything else.
