Synopsis

Originating in the Middle East and North Africa, the ancient art form of belly dancing has been practiced by women for thousands of years. Utilizing sensual and graceful movements of the hips, abdomen, and arms, the dance was once performed as entertainment for royalty and was also linked to femininity and fertility. In addition to the beauty of the dance, however, come the added benefits of flexibility and overall fitness. The Bellydance series offers a wonderful introduction to belly dancing as a form of exercise. Instructors Veena Bidasha and her sister Neena Bidasha have practiced belly dancing since childhood and have traveled throughout the Middle East and India to perform and develop their techniques. They lead the participant through simple routines that are designed to teach the fundamentals of belly dancing while being fun and invigorating. Bellydance Fitness for Beginners: Arms and Abs builds on the techniques learned in the Basic Moves program to produce an effective workout for the upper body and the abdomen. The accompanying soundtrack of Middle Eastern rhythms provides an invigorating backdrop to the workout that strengthens the abdominal muscles and tones the upper body and arms with graceful, flowing movements. ~ Sarah Block, All Movie Guide

4.0 out of 5 stars good workouts, great dancing, July 23 2002
By karibbeangirl "karibbeangirl" (Saint Paul, MN United States) - See all my reviews
If you ever wanted to get in shape but would rather go out dancing I recommend the Bellydance Fitness videos by the Bidasha twins. The workouts are not the hardest in the world but they are pretty good considering that you not only get toned but you also burn calories, learn muscle issolation techniques, bellydance moves and get it all in a short time since is section in only 25+ minutes long. The Ab movements are my personal favorites, you learn to move in ways you never knew you could before and you feel them working!

The DVD is a great value since you get two workouts for little more than the cost of one! You also get footage of the twins dancing in full costume without the credits rolling overthem like it happens in the VHS. You should also get the Basic Moves, Fat Burning DVD and the Slim Down VHS which is my personal favorite... Have fun! Dance!

4.0 out of 5 stars Read The Title, Please!, Mar 3 2004
I own the one of the twins' other DVD's--Basic Moves and Fat Burning. (See the review if you are interested). I would have to say that their style has changed a little bit on this video...they are much more relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera than they were on the other one.

To all those "bellydancers" out there who state that this is not a teaching tape...it says that right on the front. For fitness! Not instruction! If you want to learn to Middle Eastern Dance (because that is what the dance is called, not bellydance) then please check out a class in your local area. I take mine through Parks and Rec.

Within a few minutes of starting the arms section of this tape I felt as though my arms were on fire. I know I will most definately feel this tomorrow. It's a good workout, and shows you some common postures you will use if you decide to study the dance.

The abs section wasn't as good as I had expected it to be. I had a real problem with the exercise where they ask you to support your body on your arms and twist your hips. It might take me awhile before I can do that one. There are crunches and variations on crunches, as well as some yoga postures to help you stretch out in the cool down.

As for the second workout in the video, I had seen many of the movements in the Basic Moves DVD I mentioned that I already own. The hip shimmies, drops and lifts are wonderful ways to work your hips. There is a move that is a variation on a hip shimmy that I think will be a lot of fun to do and work more muscles than a traditional shimmy will...you are on your toes and stepping while shimmying.

You'll see some exercises that you should be familiar with, such as lunges. There's a reason for that: this is a workout video.

Again, the thing to remember is that this is not going to teach you to dance...it takes moves that are used in MED and incorporates them into an aerobic workout. Please keep that in mind when viewing/using this DVD.

I think so far this is the best of their series that I have used. I will continue to use this DVD as another way to exercise, and supplement what I have learned in class (to a certain extent).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for getting rid of chunk, Oct 17 2002
By former fattie (New Orleans) - See all my reviews
That said, go ahead and buy this DVD because it's really quite effective. Just watching these two chicks alone will make you say, "Jesus, I'm fat." These [women] are IN SHAPE. Actually DOING the moves is pretty difficult, but the music and the atmosphere help to distract. Be warned, you're going to look pretty goofy trying to shimmy your hips while doing "snake arms", but in the morning your [body] will HURT like it never has before.

Plus, there's no large men with socks in their unitards screaming, "Knee! Knee! Kick!" to spoil the fun.

One word of caution, however: They don't actually teach you HOW to bellydance or dance routines or anything, so don't buy this thinking you'll be Princess Kashmir or some sh*t. All the exercises are based off of bellydancing moves, but an instructional dance video this ain't.
