Descriptions du produit

From Amazon.com

On the evidence of Rockin' the Suburbs, Ben Folds's decision to jettison the two-piece Five that had backed him on four largely excellent albums has not resulted in any significant shift in trajectory. The Ben Folds Five were only getting better, gradually discovering the confidence not to hide their musical uniqueness (there have been too few piano-led power trios) and lyrical intelligence behind undergrad Barenaked Ladies-style gags. Songs like "Mess" and "Brick" signaled an extraordinary new songwriting talent worthy of comparison to Folds's obvious idols, Elvis Costello and Paul Simon. Only this album's title track harkens back to Folds's fondness for comedy, and it is by far the weakest track here. The rest is mournful, reflective, and, at best, quite magnificent. Folds's hymns to his family, "Still Fighting It" and "The Luckiest" are shot through with an honesty that's rare in alternative rock. The acerbic essence of character sketches such as "Carrying Cathy," "Losing Lisa," and "Zak & Sara" are leavened with a generous compassion. Folds's second solo effort is his best album yet. The remainder of his career must be anticipated with equal parts expectation and impatience. --Andrew Mueller

5.0étoiles sur 5 Great, classic, overlooked album, Nov. 8 2005

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Ben Folds is a piano virtuoso, amazing lyricist, talented songwriter, and an overall clever, funny, emotional, likeable artist. So why have so many people not heard his music? It's a mystery, but one thing that is not is the clear quality of this album. Everything about it has a masterful, professional, raw quality about it. As mentioned, Folds' piano is amazing. His lyrics, when not hilarious, are so emotional and moving, it's almost tangible at times. Each song on this album is self-contained. None sound like, or deal with the same subjects, as the others. There is comedy, tragedy, comfort and a strange, underlying depressing nature all in the same great record. There are so many reasons to pick this record up, that I can't name them in 1,000 words but that should be enough for you to give Ben Folds a shot.

5.0étoiles sur 5 The best CD you've never heard, Oct. 31 2004
Man, Ben Folds, what can you even say? This album is gold from top to bottom. Every song on this disc has merrit, there's not one you would really want to skip over. Ben Folds Five really took advantage of the piano based group, something that really hadn't been overdone, but something with that group just doesn't match up to Ben Folds on his own with this album. Get this CD just on a whim and you'll be more than satisfied, this is certainly one of my favourite albums (and that's saying a lot!)
