Review

This late European entry into the slasher-film cycle is a good example of how style can triumph over substance in a genre effort. The script doesn't offer much in the way of characterization -- the victims fall into distinct types and the killer is the usual slasher-film cipher -- but Stage Fright does offer a unique theatrical setting and small-time showbiz milieu that gives the tale some added flavor. The actors are do above-average work for this kind of film, with top honors going to David Brandon as the troupe's Machiavellian director and John Morghen as an amusingly bitchy actor. However, the best element of Stage Fright is Michele Soavi's direction. This protg of Dario Argento made his directorial debut here and his work shows a tremendous sense of craft for a first-timer: his pacing is nice and lean, with a good knack for timing when it comes to the shocks. Even better, he has an eye for artful design amongst the carnage and combines this visual sense with his craftsmanship to create some tense setpieces: the best is a moment involving an attempt to retrieve a key right under the killer's nose. Ultimately, Stage Fright is primarily for the horror audience but they are likely to enjoy its visually inventive approach to the usually humdrum slasher subgenre. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty darn suspenseful, Jan 12 2004
By O. B. Tryggvason (Gardabaer Iceland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is SO one of my favourites. It's gory as hell but it has plenty of suspense as well. The film's director, Michele Soavi, had prior to this film worked on at least two Dario Argento films so it's easy to see where he got his basic training. It's very stylish and has a memorable music score, not quite like the soundtrack you hear in most american slasher films. I'm a big fan of the slasher film genre and I won't condemn american slasher films (many of them are quite good) but these euro-horror-slasher films are really worth catching if you're a fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than American Slasher Flicks!, Jan 2 2004
By A Customer
This movie has it all it's super scary!, stylish direction, dark atmosphere, great camera work, gratuitous violence and gore, a creepy soundtrack and a memorable shower scene. Director Micheal Soavi is miles above and beyond Dario Argento he can actually create suspense and scare an audience, something Argento has't done in dozens of films. American Horror films seldom deliver like this one does. Bravo to Soavi's brilliant debut film.

1.0 out of 5 stars I got the bloody thing for free!, Oct 25 2003
By MadDogg (Winnipeg Mb) - See all my reviews
Thas right folks, I owned this movie back in the day. As a matter of fact I walked into Rogers video and beleive it or not, they had this movie with a price tag on it that said free! But that explains everything. This movie was the biggest piece of crap ever. I felt ripped off when I got it for free.
