From Amazon.com

The Barbirolli volume in the Great Conductors series focuses on relatively rare items in Sir John's discography. This Elgar Enigma Variations, for example, is his first stereo version, not the later, better-known one, which has a better orchestra. But this 1956 Pye release has a lot going for it, too, not least the extra touch of warmth in the string-centered slower variations like "Nimrod." There's also a long out-of-print Ravel Mother Goose Suite with the Halle winds a bit overextended, a heavyweight Meistersinger Act One Prelude, and a magnificent Love Duet from one of Barbirolli's rare complete opera recordings, Puccini's Madama Butterfly, with Scotto and Bergonzi both in great voice. The real rarity, though, is the Mahler Second, a work Barbirolli often performed in his later years, but never recorded. EMI provides strong, cleaned-up stereo sound for this live performance from Stuttgart made shortly before the conductor's death. Barbirolli's performance is full of passionate fervor, but execution is often slipshod. Still, admirers of Barbirolli's Mahler will want his only available Mahler Second. --Dan Davis

3.0étoiles sur 5 A very memorable experience, Aoû 1 2003
Par L. Johan Modée (Earth) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
I have just listened to Barbirolli's account of Mahler's second symphony as it is presented to us on this recording. I must say that it was a memorable experience. Even though the orchestral playing is not always accurate and even if there indeed are some serious flaws, this is nonetheless a thrilling and absorbing interpretation. The Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart plays as good as they can, I suppose, and Barbirolli's very personal way of interpreting this symphony is never clinical and never boring: it is passionate and powerful.

Apart from the Mahler performance, this disc contains also a very good Barbirolli account of Elgar's Enigma variations and some additional enjoyable stuff as well. A true bargain.

With a better orchestra, this could have been one of the very best performances of this symphony. But, among the classic performances, I think Otto Klemperer's Mahler second with Philharmonia must be seen as the first choice. And for a modern digital performance, look no further than Simon Rattle's outstanding contribution with CBSO.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A STUNNING MAHLER 2ND, Jui 18 2002
As Amazon has yet to list the contents of this set let me do so as it will quickly beacome apparent to those who appreciate both Barbirolli and Mahler that there is buried treasure here. The set consists of:
1. Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Composed by Richard Wagner
Performed by London Symphony Orchestra

2. Variations on an Original Theme, 'Enigma'
Composed by Sir Edward Elgar
Performed by Hallé Orchestra

3. Ma mère l'oye
Composed by Maurice Ravel
Performed by Hallé Orchestra

4. Symphony No. 2, 'Resurrection' in C minor
Composed by Gustav Mahler
Performed by Stuttgart Südfunkchor / Stuttgart School of Music Chorus / Stuttgart Radio
Symphony Orchestra/ Birgit Finnilä, Helen Donath / Recorded in concert April 1970

5. Madama Butterfly (finale act 1)
Composed by Giacomo Puccini
Performed by Rome Opera Orchestra / Carlo Bergonzi, Renata Scotto

The "Enigma" is his Pye recording from the 1950's which many consider to be the finest of the 4 he recorded. The Ravel is the only mono recording in group but it is nicely remastered and the performance is magical. The Butterfly excerpt comes from his complete set and the Wagner was recorded by EMI in 1970.
All of these are fine performances but the undoubted attraction of this set is the complete Mahler 2nd recorded in concert some 3 months before Barbirolli's death and the last time he would conduct Mahler in concert. Barbirolli was a passionate Mahlerite spending up to 2 years learning each symphony. At times he copied them out entirely to better grasp their structure. He first conducted the 2nd Symphony in 1958 and he would conduct it some 32 times in concert. Berlin, Houston, Dublin , Milan and Israel are a few of the places he performed the work. In Israel the overwhelmed audience gave him a 15 minute standing ovation.
Passion and grandeur are the two things he brings to this performance. He carefully builds up each movement avoiding the urge to overwhelm at each climax. Tempos can vary widely within a movement as Barbirolli takes heed of Mahler's own diverse tempo fluctuations. The climax of the 3rd movement for example will quite simply take your breath away. Barbirolli also manages to bring out Mahler's often grotesque woodwind details which are often lost in the mass of sound. They are a wild bunch at times as are the brass who are really given a run through by Barbirolli. They are brought often to the edge but Barbirolli manages to hang on to them. Topping it off are very fine performances by the soloists and choir. This recording has circulated on various "unofficial " labels. This performance is mastered from Radio Stuttgart's stereo master so we have the best sound possible. This is quite simply a stunning performance and even by itself would be worth the price of the album. With all told a real bargin.
