Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Recorded during live concert performances, Lang Lang’s second Telarc release justifies the positive buzz surrounding this young pianist’s rapidly ascending international career. He brings plenty of finger power and long-lined drama to Rachmaninov’s ubiquitous Third Concerto, yet takes plenty of time to let the lyrical, soaring tunes spin without an inkling of self-indulgence. He admirably adjusts the piano part to accompany when he doesn’t bear the melodic burden, and gets more expressive mileage from transitions than many pianists do.

For once, the thicker, more difficult first movement cadenza doesn’t sound unwieldy and elephantine. The piano is a little too prominent in the mix next to Temirkanov’s sensitively detailed, flowing orchestral support. While Lang Lang has not fully internalised the quivering underbelly of Scriabin’s passionate keyboard writing, his poised and secure readings of 10 Etudes still boast plenty of dynamism, idiomatic nuance, and roaring, Horowitz-like octaves. Watch this pianist!--Jed Distler

5.0 out of 5 stars Rachmaninoff at its best, Jun 1 2004
By A Customer
After having watched 'shine', I fell in love with Rachmaninoff's 3rd. However, no recording of this masterpiece was able to move me as much as Lang Lang's interpretation. And my expectations were not disappointed when watching him in Vancouver 2003. He seems to well know about the dark sides and dangers of this piece, but in his interpretation, the good wins over the evil, and he plays with musical insight that is astonishing for his young age. And, no doubt, his technique is nothing but brilliant.
Give it a try, and you'll fall in love with it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Distorted and irritating, April 30 2004

It mystifies me why a young pianist like Lang Lang should start his career with Rach 3, one of the most-recorded concertos in the world. He simply can't handle the burden of such a piece yet. Well, there's no use denying Lang tries to make something out of the concerto. There's one problem though: his ideas are pretty annoying. His very strange and inappropriate light-fingered playing in all three movements is completely disconcerting and ugly, and he lacks any feeling for atmospheric playing. He messes around with the tempo and dynamics everywhere, putting accents where they don't belong and subduing important events. There isn't an ounce of expressivity to be found anywhere here. It is simply confusing to the limits to hear his distorted and randomized playing. I really have no idea what to make of his crazy playing in the first movement cadenza, for example. Maybe he wanted to imitate the insane Horowitz/Ormandy recording? OK, Lang hits less wrong notes but at least Horowitz shows some genuine feeling at moments. Lang sounds like a directionless projectile all the way through. Lang's way with the Scriabin etudes is a little better, and he really seems to get something of the musical structure of the pieces here. But there's still the same arbitrary and uneasy feeling in his playing that puts me off. The cliché has been mentioned many times before, but I just can't refrain from saying that Lang has been put on the stage way too quickly. It is true that some artists might benefit from playing at an early age, but for Lang things have come much too early yet. He should still be practicing in all rest, free from pressure and expectations, if he wants to become a pianist the world should really take care of. Fortunately, in the meantime we have wonderful Rach 3 recordings like Andsnes/Berglund and Ashkenazy/Fistoulari, both young pianists who nevertheless show a level of maturity that even their older colleagues could take an example of. Needless to say, Lang Lang's recording simply pales in comparison with those two.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, Jan 14 2004
By Greg O'Keefe (Surrey, British Columbia Canada) - See all my reviews

I had the chance to see this young pianist in Vancouver in the Fall of 2003. I came out with new respect for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, but found Lang's performance too over the top. He tried to dazzle me with his ability, and while I am sure that he is brilliant, he didn't convey the music as much as he displayed his talent.

While the movie 'Shine' obviously brought me into contact with the Rach 3 as it is now called, I still hold an affinity to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Rafael Orozco version of this piece. However, the best is still the Horowitz and Ormandy version of this. If you want to hear the correct use of talent listen to the latter.

Lang is a young one, and like a young wine, needs to be kept in the basement for a while until it matures.
