Enregistré en public en 1955, l'opéra de Giordano bénéficie d'un plateau vocal de tout premier plan. Pour tout dire, on ne voit pas quels autres chanteurs de cette époque auraient pu, avec autant de talent, interpréter ces personnages. Bien sûr, au dessus de tout, il y a Maria Callas, superbe, incandescente, qui demeure inégalée dans cette manière de se "consumer", vocalement comme scéniquement. Mais il serait injuste que de ne tendre l'oreille que vers la Diva : Mario del Monaco, avec son abattage, sa voix de ténor italien archétypale, fait des miracles, et sa présence vaut bien celle de sa partenaire. 4.0 out of 5 stars DESPITE THE SOUND ---- AN ELECTRIC PERFORMANCE, May 23 2004

The sound on this performance is, granted, not the greatest. There's some rather fearful distortion in spots (most notably in the middle of Callas' "La Mamma Morta), but on the whole, the sound is adequate. It's amazing how quickly the ear adjusts. So don't let this stop you. The performance? Well, they simply don't sing like this anymore. Del Monaco had a stentorian trumpet of a voice, and he uses it here with all the stops pulled out. He reveled in this role, and its obvious why. Maria Callas is heard here in a role she learned in a matter of days, and comes out shining like the great diva she was. She's in excellent voice, and she uses her chest voice to great effect. The final duet, with both Callas and del Monaco in full and easy voice, is splashy and spectacular. The price of this recording is certainly reasonable enough, and there a lot of great singing to hear. The only reason for the 4 star rating (instead of the 5 that the performance deserves) is the sound.

The best and most exciting recording of this opera thanks to Callas. Not since soprano Lina Buna Rasa's old 78's has there been a version as exciting and exhilarating. If your looking for perfect sound and perfect singing stay away from this recording. better still stay away from all apera.
