Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Viktoria Mullova's lithe and limpid playing in this recital of three Mozart Violin Concertos is just about ideal. There are many and various recordings of these pieces, but Mullova's authentically informed though certainly not dry or academic approach gets right to their gorgeously lyrical heart as few others have done before. Doubling as both soloist and director of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Mullova adds the best of period-instrument practice to her formidable technique, bringing not only assurance but a lively grace to bear on these delightful works. The disc opens with No. 3 in G, K216, arguably the most ravishing of Mozart's five solo concertos for the instrument; here the warm, rounded tone of Mullova's 1723 Stradivarius evokes all the radiance of the serene Adagio. Elsewhere, in the bold outer movements of No. 4, K218, for example, or the bustling Presto of No. 1, K207, Mullova's use of gut strings and Classical bowing style impart a refreshing vitality to her performance, sympathetically supported by the orchestra. Here is a musician who understands that these concertos are not display pieces, but music to nourish the soul. --Mark Walker

Chronique amazon.fr

5.0 out of 5 stars Mullova returns!, Feb 2 2003
By A Customer
Viktoria Mullova has kind of faded lately from the mainstream classical vocabulary, if you will, but not from the minds and hearts of her fans. This album is wonderful. Mozart here is beautifully balanced; Viktoria and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment never sound Romantic or Baroque; these are Classical concertos in a performance that both reminds you and makes you forget when it was written; I just enjoyed the music. So will you. There is a grace and lyric dignity to this CD that is hard to quantify, but is impossible to miss.

Oh by the way, the playing is flawless. Especially Mullova on that gut-strung Stradivarius! Wow!
