From Amazon.com

Through channeling his intelligent virtuosity toward musical ends, Murray Perahia reveals the distinctive voice of each Chopin Étude, rather than imposing a "one style fits all" aesthetic upon the music. His easy mastery of the right-hand double-note challenges of Op. 10 No. 7 and Op. 25 Nos. 6 & 8 and the taxing rotary patterns of the famous "Black Key" and "Winter Wind" études enable him to clarify their significant left-hand component. Note, too, the "Octave" étude's long-lined ebb and flow, or a sharper, more aggressive C-sharp Minor, Op. 10 No. 4, than the one Perahia recorded in the early 1990s. But his unusually brisk take on the E-flat minor (Op. 10 No. 6) trivializes the music's aching harmonic tension, and the two C Minor Études (including the "Revolutionary") are a shade inhibited compared with the unbridled bravura of the versions by György Cziffra (Philips) and Juana Zayas (Music & Arts). These quibbles, however, should not prevent piano lovers from experiencing Perahia's well-considered and superbly engineered interpretations of the oft-recorded masterpieces. --Jed Distler

This is an excelent, very very very great recording, probably one of the best out there. it's absolutely fabulous in every single way... I've lisened to a lot of the recordings so I know which ones out there are good and this is great. Perahia does it again!

5.0étoiles sur 5 Perfect, Jui 26 2004
Par Un client
Murray Is one of the greatest pianists who ever lived. He is great at every composer. These etudes prove my point even further. These etudes take about 5 years to learn and record and it is great when they are played this well! Buy this!

1.0étoiles sur 5 PRESS AGENTS' MIRACLE, Mai 19 2004
The bass is overemphasized. The playing is tired, both technically (too often) and emotionally (always). Perahia overpracticed. The take-away feeling one has is not inspiration, but boredom.

Perahia has nothing to say here, but soldiers on to the end...so that the hypesters can have something to promote. If it weren't for that Perahia "hive," this disc wouldn't be given a second thought.

Still, some people are seeing through the cloud of smoke being blown. The "Used" versions of this CD are going at an heavy discount. Some reviewers are now unwilling to swallow the party line - and they are called "contrarian." *I* would call them individualists (vs. the group).

Garrick Ohlsson doesn't have the same sort of influential backing that Perahia has - but his playing is vastly more alive. Ohlsson's disc of the Etudes (which, unlike Perahia's, includes the Three Nouvelle Etudes) is unjustly neglected. It has drama, color, ideas, liveliness, and music: everything Perahia's effort does not. Give Ohlsson a try and see what you're missing. (As to monophonic versions, there are Backhaus, Cortot, and Arrau. I've heard only the Arrau, and it's gorgeous.)
