2.0 out of 5 stars Overdubbed footage. Big letdown, Jun 3 2004
By A Customer
When I saw this DVD for sale I figured, Great finally some live footage from the Deep Purple early days. Well, most of the live footage was overdubbed with studio music and some of the footage or I should say very short snips of it was overdubbed with a different song than they were playing live! It was mostly interviews. How many times are they going to tell the Smoke on the water story? It was a yawn fest.

3.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this more, Feb 11 2004
By Papa Joe (Aiea, HI United States) - See all my reviews
I am roughly the same age as the musicians in this group. MII is THE DP lineup as far as I am concerned. And Machine Head is their defining album. I REALLY wanted to like this DVD.

I had so thoroughly enjoyed the Pink Floyd DSOTM doc, that I went after others in the Classic Album series. But this one matches neither the insight nor the technical "under the covers" nuggets found in the Floyd's.

There were good moments. The Smoke on the Water story, although pretty well known by now, is entertaining and informative nonetheless...and the Highway Star "how do you write a song" clip was cute. But no real Blackmore contribution other than the SOTW riff (did you see Gilmour's stuff on DSOTM??) and Paice, who was one of the era's best drummers, was a wallflower.

Entertaining if you like DP MII as much as I do, but far inferior to others in this series, to be perfectly honest.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the Classic Album series, Nov 14 2003
By Bob (CA) - See all my reviews
I've viewed almost all of the "Classic Album" series DVD's, and this is undoubtedly the best of the bunch. This fantastic look back at a very creative and original album leaves you wanting to listen to the album all over again, just to hear what you've missed. Each band member offers remarkably detailed insight into his own contribution and the contributions of bandmates. The story behind the song "Smoke On The Water" is very fun and interesting. This DVD mixes a great documentary with live music clips and wonderful interviews. The band members were interviewed separately, which probably allowed them to be more expressive about one another on film. There is no bashing here, however. It's quite evident that the individual members of Deep Purple admire each other and the contribution each made to a truly classic, epic album. If this disk is your introduction to the "Classic Album" DVD series, you may be somewhat disappointed with the other releases (although they are all quite good).
