Product Description

From Amazon.com

Translating Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean character from British television to the big screen takes a bit of a toll, but there are some hilarious sequences in this popular comedy. Bean, a boy-man twit with a knack for getting into difficult binds (and then making them worse and worse and worse), is a London museum guard who is sent to Los Angeles in the company of the famous painting Whistler's Mother. He's mistaken as an art expert by the well-meaning curator (Peter MacNicol) of an L.A. museum, but Bean's famously eccentric behavior soon causes the poor guy to almost lose his family and job. The insularity of Bean's TV world is sacrificed in this film, and that change diminishes some of the character's appeal. But Atkinson is a man naturally full of comedy, and he doesn't let his fans down. --Tom Keogh

Review

A monster hit internationally, this comedy showcases the physically expressive talents of actor Rowan Atkinson, who provides a few major laughs in elaborate slapstick sequences, some of them cribbed wholesale from his winning British TV series featuring the same character. Atkinson is a comic gem, a throwback to an earlier era of silent screen legends such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, and his gifts are most fully realized in the mealy-mouthed, unflappably odd-duck character of Bean. Overall, however, the film suffers the same fate as many other projects in translation from the small screen to the big, experienced most frequently in the attempt to transform sketches from the NBC series Saturday Night Live to the cinema. In dumbing down the jokes, "opening up" a character (read: making an oddball less offensive), and generally seeking to broaden the appeal of a skit that might have been obscure or off-putting to some segment of the audience, mainstream films repeatedly sap their source material of the original humor. Such is often the case in this silly concoction that seeks to Americanize a thoroughly British invention by shooting it in the sun-drenched, rainbow-colored hues that scream "Comedy!" for the funny bone-impaired, even tossing actor Burt Reynolds into the addled mix -- as a general, no less. Worse, Mr. Bean is shockingly verbose in comparison to his earlier incarnations, a development that may have been essential to the narrative but robs the quirky spasmodic of his rib-tickling charm. Bean is a worthy attempt to bring a little-known comic's abundant skills to light, but the filmmakers don't trust their audience to "get it," with the end result suffering a serious case of lowest common denomination. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Sit down, relax and have fun, Sep 1 2008

Mr. Bean
If you want to have some good laugh, just sit down, relax and enjoy this DVD. This is not a story with a deep meaning or an eclectic film. But...hey...funny stuff is part of our life and is very important. Laughing is a great way to relax and feel better.
This is a movie you can watch more than once and every time I watch it...I have a good time. I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The art of a comedy., May 28 2004
By Darko (London, KY USA) - See all my reviews
I saw this film at the local theater when I was but a boy in 1997. Batman and Robin was a complete f***ing failure that year but I had something to bounce back on. And that was Bean. This movie was too hillarious for words. Rowan Atkinson is one of the greatest comedic masterminds of all time. He can take one simple mistake such as for example, sneezing on an important piece of American history like the "Whistler's Mother" painting and turning it into a full scale disaster involving paint thinner, breaking and entering, bathroom humor, and an incredibly moving speech and make it so frickin funny that you have to see it again. I must admit, I saw Bean 3 times that year and it got funnier every time. It's like a classic film such as Forrest Gump or Star Wars. Films like that get better and better everytime because you notice something new and it feels like watching a brand new movie. That's what makes movie watching so worthwhile. It starts to grow on you. But anyhow, Bean is probably one of the greatest comedies of all time and it only gets better because behind this great comedy there was an even greater television series. In 1998, the Fox family channel which is now ABC family swept into my cable company's channel list and Mr Bean was one of the shows that came on all the time. And it's even funnier that the movie. Some of the movie's bits came from the show such as Bean getting the turkey stuck to his head. If you buy this dvd which you should, buy the dvd sets of the tv series. But on a final note, this is one of the most hillarious films ever, so buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, May 26 2004
By Kosovar (New York) - See all my reviews
Rowan Atkinson talks in this movie for a change!
It's one of the best comedies ever.
This time, mr.Bean is a caretaker at Royal National Gallery. As a matter of fact he's a sleeper as he sleeps all day long at his work place.
Since the chairman adores mr.Bean instead of getting him fired he sends mr.Bean to U.S.A.
This is where the trouble begins...:)

A must see movie
