Glinka's RUSLAN AND LYUDMILLA, based on a Pushkin fairy tale, is probably the second greatest Russian opera, after Mussorgsky's BORIS GODUNOV. Unfortunately, it is very little known and rarely performed in the West. So it's great news that this excellent production is now available. Like the other Kirov/Gergiev operas on video and DVD, this one is a class production with fine ensemble work. The sound and technical quality is excellent. If you have any interest in Russian opera, this is a must-have.

This performance of the Kirov opera is a delight in every way. The orchestra's playing under Valery Gergiev is spectacular. The overture is performed in a way I never heard before. The singers are all very good with Netrebko in one of the title roles. It was very interesting to see the star of the opera world in her early twenties. The opera itself tends to be a little long but the music is good. The dancers, costumes and scenery are spectacular and it is very rare to see something like that nowadays when boring, empty stages are the norm. I recommend it highly.

This is simply a wonderful and magic production of a rarely performed opera.The opulent costumes and stage settings are right up there with the vocal castings and superb orchestra directed by Gergieve.Whatever you do get this rarity while you can.Very highly recommended.
