5.0 out of 5 stars CANTO is beautiful - every track exceptional - I love it, Jun 24 2005
The tracks in Gino Vannelli's CANTO are, each and every one, wonderful - heart wrenchingly beautiful. I cannot fully articulate how much I enjoy this CD. I've listened to, and loved, all of Gino Vannelli's albums / CDs / music / over the years. If you are expecting the same synthesized pop/rock/jazz that you liked (and I loved!) in his "Powerful People" album (which was co-produced by Herb Alpert) you may be disappointed by CANTO - which is more in the "Classical" music genre. I feel - enriched - each and every time I listen to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beauty and Brawn, May 30 2004
By A Customer
This collection presents Gino Vannelli's magnificent voice in a format he hadn't recorded previously. Let's call it pop-opera, for lack of a more precise description. The beauty (tender, heart-tugging ballads) of this music is matched by the power (brawn) of Vannelli's voice, soaring to operatic heights with passion and confidence. I'm no opera critic (or fan), so I can't really say if the performance compares to those of legitemate opera singers. But I can say that, for a popular recording, this is one remarkable vocal tour de force, accompanied by lush but not over-done orchestration. A highlight: the Celtic folk-influenced "Wayward Lover," a song that brings me to tears. Why this CD has not been formally released (or marketed) in the US as of this writing is beyond me. Millions more should be exposed to the beauty of this remarkable recording.

2.0 out of 5 stars this is NOT a return to the jazz-fusion of his best work, May 22 2004
By Brad Byers (Las Vegas, Nv. United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Gino hasn't really done anything for me since the late 70's... I am in it more for the musicians and the groove he USED to display...for the past 20 years it's been this romantic "from the soul" stuff. Great, if you're a female looking for love and longing for romance, but please Gino, return to the "Brother to Brother" days or "Storm at Sunup". This sleepy stuff bores me to death. You and Sting need to wake up!
