5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have disc, Jun 29 2004
I purchased this disc primarily for the "choral fantasy" and "the tempest" written by Beethoven and was not in any manner dissapointed. In fact, this is the best "choral fantasy" I have heard. The emotion of this music literally pours from the speakers.

Much to my surprise, though, the work I have listened to most often, with rapt attention, is the title track "Credo" (by Arvo Part, a composer I thought I wasn't fond of). Upon first listening, I literally said "Wow!" This is powerful music and led me to change my opinion of Arvo Part. For those of you who, like me, disdain most modern works, this may change your opinion. Very highly recommeded!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good sign, Jun 25 2004
By Bogdan Iliescu (Houston, TX USA) - See all my reviews

Beethoven is the essential figure of my music world and I aproach each disc with his music very critically. And this one came as a surprise. I must admit that I stopped believing that Beethoven will be played as he used to be by the great pianists of the last century (Backhaus, Schnabel, Arrau to name a few). But Helene does a very fine job. The "Tempest" sounds and feels as right as you might expect. The tempi, the intonation, the understanding of the music are all in place producing a very convincing rendition of this sonata. I couldn't help notice a very intelligent and eloquent left hand. As another reviewer said there are some very fine versions availabe but this one will tell you as much about it. Helene produces a very beutiful sound and a very deeply musical experience in a true Beethovenian spirit.

Same goes for the "Fantasia". Salonen leads a complelling orchestral performance and the work comes out in a fine shape, finer than most and surely doing as much as this composition (not quite the most "refined" of Beethoven's) allows in terms of music.

I can't say much about the other two pieces as is the first time I try to listen to them but the Beethoven on this disc surely makes him worthy of all the attention. I must say that I will definitely look forward to other recordings of Beethoven's piano solo work by what seems to be a very profound and expressive pianist.

5.0 out of 5 stars What classical music should be, May 9 2004
By Mark McLaughlin "pop culture junkie" (Deerfield Beach, FL) - See all my reviews

Exciting, emotional, beautiful and interesting, that's what sets this apart from the rest of the classical pack. helene is an amazing piano player and manages to include amazing depths of emotion through her instrument. She is also of course amazingly great technically and should be deeply respected by all musicians.
