4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Movies & Restoration! Disc Quality Questionable!!, Jun 2 2005
By Tony Bensley (North Bay) - See all my reviews
I have not only volume 1, but all three of this awesome collection!!

Like some other reviewers, I have had to return volume 1, which I have returned to Wal-Mart twice now. Fortunately, they allowed me to trade in only the disc that was defective, which in my case was disc 1. The first time around, the glitch was on "Buck Privates" (Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy Scene) & the second time, it was the moving candle scene from "Hold That Ghost." This time, I fast forwarded through all of the movies rather than merely skipping through each chapter [which is what I did after the first exchange], and there were no apparent problems this time around. Had a similar problem with volume 3, which I only had to exchange once. No problems at all with volume 2.

I must say that the inconvenience of the exchanging for this collection, for me at least, is definitely worthwhile, as I have loved Abbott & Costello movies since I was about 12 years old. I am anxiously awiting for the release of volume 4, which I hope will have the copyright entangled "It Ain't Hay", which I think I might have seen once in the seventies or very early eighties.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag, but Good DVD Value, Mar 15 2005
By J. Pinkerton Snoopington (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
"The Best of Abbott and Costello Vol. 1" from Universal collects the duo's first six films for the studio: One Night in the Tropics (they don't star in this one); Buck Privates; In the Navy; Hold That Ghost; Keep 'Em Flying; Ride 'Em Cowboy; Pardon my Sarong; and Who Done It?
Those who liked Abbott and Costello comedies as a kid (like I did) may be disappointed with these movie. They're all practically the same, with the same boring love story, the same square-jawed hero, the same skippable novelty musical acts, and the same wheezy comedy routines that we've heard a million times before. The feeling of deja vu was probably easier to handle back when these films were released in the 40s, when Abbott and Costello movies were seen at the local theatres only once, and several months between. All of these movies have several truly funny moments (Lou Costello's enormous double takes still make me chuckle), though I enjoyed the comedy team's antics more when I was seven.
In this batch, the best movies are the horror/suspense ones "Hold That Ghost" and "Who Done It?," which forshadow the success they had with "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (still by far Abbott and Costello's best movie). The service comedies like "Buck Privates" and "Keep 'Em Flying," though popular in their time, come across as the most hopelessly dated. If nothing else, however, they give an interesting glimpse at the popular humour of their time (and really, the worst Abbott and Costello movies are probably better than the worst modern comedies).
No matter what you think of the films, the DVD set is undeniably a good value, bringing all of them out on one set for $25. The image quality is grainy at times but perfectly acceptable overall. The extras are production notes for each film and, in most cases, theatrical trailers. The DVD packaging is very nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ONE & ONLY ABBOTT & COSTELLO !, Jul 19 2004
By THE CRITIC "MOVIE MANIAC" (Windsor, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
I used to watch "Abbott and Costello" on Sunday morning's as a young boy with my father. After viewing Volume One I am certain that the picture and sound quality on Television was not as clear as this DVD set. I don't know what kind of restoration went into these films, but in my opinion the picture and sound quality are simply amazing. I have read about some people having viewing glitches and freezing but I have not experienced these issues myself.

This DVD set is a great way to introduce the family to "Abbott & Costello" at a bargain price from Amazon. I have just added 8 Abbott and Costello movies to my collection for less than I paid for the "Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein" DVD. By the way look for that film on the upcoming volume 3 release if you don't already have it.

As a huge Abbott & Costello fan I wish we could receive more in the way of extra features like family commentaries or bloopers if any from Universal Studios. Abbott & Costello have been entertaining audiences since 1931 and they appeared in nearly 40 films throughout their great careers, so there has to be tons of bonus material available for these DVD releases; so why not include it?

Whether you're a hard core fan of these comic greats or discovering them for the first time, some of their funniest films are in Volume One. I recommend you pick up your set today. For all things Abbott & Costello I suggest you visit their official website.

DVD Movies Include:
-One Night in the Tropics (1940)
-Buck Privates (1941)
-In the Navy (1941)
-Hold that Ghost (1941)
-Keep `Em Flying (1941)
-Ride `Em Cowboy (1942)
-Pardon My Sarong (1942)
-Who Done It? (1942
