4.0 out of 5 stars A good show, Mar 18 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This is a big old romp of an opera, superbly played, reasonably-well acted and well-sung. If it's impact is as lasting as an April snowstorm, the fault lies more at Tchaikovsky's door than that of the performers.

It's a story of friendship and loyalty sacrificed for lust, the corruption of power, the pursuit of revenge. Meaty stuff for an opera. Trouble is, Tchaikovsky got fed up with it and the final act produces an abrupt ending where there should be a climax. By this time, though, we've had a great ride for our money. Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra play like demons with plenty of old-fashioned braying brass, Nikolai Putilin gives us a big dose of tenebrous Russian bass, Diadkova proves once again what a fine character actor/singer she is, Loskutova impresses us visually and vocally in the soprano role of Maria, and the dancing parts are more than capably taken by the Kirov's ballet stable. On top of that we listen to a Russian tenor, Viktor Lutsiuk, who sings rather than brays for a change and looks heroic. In the face of all this impressive talent and superb execution, it's difficult to be critical. I've certainly blown more time on less rewarding entertainment than the two and a half hours this opera demands.

Unless you demand great portent from your operas, I'd recommend this wholeheartedly.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good Tchaikovsky opera not well known in US A, Jun 15 2004

(REAL NAME)
If you enjoy Tchaikovsky operas, you will like this one. The singing and conducting are very good, as are the costumes.
