5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, this show is coming to DVD!, May 9 2004
By Robert Stickles (Hamilton, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
I'd like to address some of the criticisms levelled by one reviwer, who most likely has seen very little of the show:

(Original reviwer spelling mistakes left in for posterity)

"Animation that vomits on the beautiful arwork of Spider-man artists Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr"

Interesting, since 'Jazzy' John Sr. was the art consultant for the first season of the show!

"At least the other Marvel cartoons at the time made their artwork like like the artist's"

That's because they actually WERE real pages of Jack Kirby and Don Heck artwork with some bits of limited animation thrown in.

"... the series itself doesn't go near touching his normal life. We don't see Peter dealing with the problems in his life that made us sympathize with him in the first place. He is nothing but a one-dimensional "I need to save the day" character"

Can you tell me of any other cartoon on Saturday mornings in the late 60's that had continuing stories and character development like you describe? TV animation wasn't ready for the level of storytelling Stan, Steve, and John were doing in comics at the time. Can you blame this series for 'going with the pack'? For what it's worth, there were some 'Peter Parker with problems' stories in the second season of the show.

"... and even when the enevitable "origin" episode is done, it is quite lacking in the story."

I suggest you actually read Amazing Fantasy #15 some time. The '67 origin story is by far the most faithful adaptation of that story on screen, in most scenes word-for-word. They gloss over his showbiz career, but thats pretty much all that was left out.

"Take the Green Goblin as an example {...} he is nothing but a petty crook, determined to use his skills to rob jewelry stores. What a waste."

And the 1990's series did exactly the same dumbing down to the Hobgoblin. He's just a goofy villian with no personal conneciton to Spidey at all.

"The cliche mad scientist is bad enough, but Spider-man vs. evil aliens from another planet?!"

Watch the 1990's episode with Doctor Strange and Dormammu (part of the _Sins of the Fathers_ storyline) and compare it to _Revolt in the Fifth Dimension_ from the last season of the '67 show and you tell me where inspiration for the 1990's episode was drawn from.

"Ugh. Do yourself a favor, and instead check out the DVDs with the 1994 and 2003 cartoons, and leave this travesty in the dust, where it belongs."

Funny, I was going to suggest the exact opposite. I'm not going to bash the more modern shows in this forum, but the one element missing from the shows that came after the first Spidey cartoon is ATMOSPHERE. There are times where the show is genuinely creepy and disturbing, moreso to an impressionable 7-year-old seeing this show in syndication in the late 70's. Music and imagery from this series have stayed with me (and others that I've talked to) for years.

That's really what nostalagia is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Spidey RULES!!!!, April 28 2004
By Michael Minutaglio (Staten Island, NY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I remember watching this as a kid and absolutley loving it to death. I havent seen it in YEARS, and I am hoping I will still love it as an adult.

Here is the official episode listing that I have recieved...

Finally today, we've had a few questions about where we are getting the episode count of "52" from, because people are counting more than 70 "story titles" in the series. 52 is the official count from Buena Vista, and it's the official count of half-hour episodes that were aired. Many of the episodes include two different stories. Here is the list of half-hour episodes. Ones that contains multiple stories show both titles, separated by a "/":

"The Power of Doctor Octopus / Sub-Zero For Spidey",
"Where Crawls the Lizard / Electro the Human Lightning Bolt",
"The Menace of Mysterio",
"The Sky is Falling / Captured By J. Jonah Jameson", "Never Step On a Scorpion / Sands of Crime",
"Diet of Destruction / The Witching Hour",

"Kilowatt Kaper / The Peril of Parafino",
"Horn of the Rhino",
"The One-Eyed Idol / Fifth Avenue Phantom",
"The Revenge of Dr. Magneto / The Sinister Prime Minister",
"The Night of the Villains / Here Comes Trubble",
"Spiderman Meets Dr. Noah Boddy / The Fantastic Fakir",
"Return of the Flying Dutchman / Farewell Performance",
"The Golden Rhino / Blueprint For Crime",
"The Spider and the Fly / The Slippery Doctor Von Schlick",
"The Vulture's Prey / The Dark Terrors",
"The Terrible Triumph of Doctor Octopus / Magic Malice",
"Fountain of Terror / Fiddler On the Loose",
"To Catch a Spider / Double Identity",
"Sting of the Scorpion / Trick or Treachery",
"The Origin of Spiderman",
"King Pinned",
"Swing City",
"Criminals in the Clouds",
"Menace From the Bottom of the World",
"Diamond Dust",
"Spiderman Battles the Molemen",
"Phantom From the Depths of Time",
"The Evil Sorcerer",
"Vine",
"Pardo Presents",
"Cloud City of Gold",
"Neptune's Nose Cone",
"Home",
"Blotto",
"Thunder Rumble",
"Spiderman Meets Skyboy",
"Cold Storage",
"To Cage a Spider",
"The Winged Thing / Conner's Reptiles",
"Trouble With Snow / Spiderman Vs. Desperado",
"Sky Harbor / The Big Brainwasher",
"The Vanishing Doctor Vespasian / Scourge of the Scarf",
"Super Swami / The Birth of Microman",
"Knights Must Fall / The Devious Dr. Dumpty",
"Up From Nowhere",
"Rollarama",
"Rhino / The Madness of Mysterio",
"Revolt in the Fifth Dimension",
"Specialists and Slaves",
"Down to Earth", and
"Trip to Tomorrow".

I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The movie owes this series. Bigtime!, April 7 2004
By Ryan Piekenbrock "ryanzavier" (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
No way the excellent Spider-man movie is such a huge hit without this series. No way. How many kids watched this over and over again for years. Especially in Canada where it played for years and years. I hope this is from the original film and has been cleaned up. In some ways I never really saw this show in its original glory only faded prints.

And the soundtrack! Don't get me started on that!

My favourite is the second season with the whacked out deco and jazz score.

One question. When is Rocket Robin Hood coming out?
