From Amazon.com

Purportedly one of Walt Disney's most personal pet projects, Darby O'Gill shows the effort and care put into it. Even now the special effects hold up shockingly well. Darby O'Gill is an estate caretaker, but in his advanced years he's more fond of telling tall tales in the local pub about the wee folk than keeping the grounds. A new man (a very youthful Sean Connery) is sent in to take his place, and O'Gill doesn't know what will become of himself and his daughter. He snags three spectacular opportunities, however, when he catches the king of the leprechauns. This film is whimsical without being silly, supernatural without being outlandish, and all and all a treat for the whole family. --Keith Simanton

Review

Darby O'Gill and the Little People is an utterly charming little fantasy that should captivate all sorts of little people, while providing more than sufficient entertainment for their parents. Darby presents a very Hollywood version of Ireland but does so in such a convivial manner that few will complain about its accuracy -- and, wonder of wonders, it's one film that finds beauty in Irish locations that are not always emerald green. Darby is also delightfully straightforward about its fantasy, with no long explanations and sidebars, just a few words here and there to explain the bare bones about leprechauns. The film also boasts a fine cast, from the jaunty, irrepressible Darby of Albert Sharpe to the youthfully handsome Michael of Sean Connery to the mischievous, impish leprechaun king of Jimmy O'Dea. Robert Stevenson directs the proceedings with a smooth hand, deftly mixing the comic and the fantastic, the romantic and the dramatic, and throwing in a frightful banshee sequence to boot. Best of all, Darby has some marvelous special effects, from the aforementioned banshee and its concurrent black coach to the legion of dancing, prancing little people that light up the screen. It's a merry, engaging frolic of a movie. ~ Craig Butler, All Movie Guide

5.0étoiles sur 5 I love this movie..., Jui 24 2004

...and I generally dislike Disney films!

This dates from the time when Disney wasn't afraid to be dark and eerie. The story balances whimsy with supernatural terrors and is appropriate for both Halloween and St. Patrick's Day.

This film lovingly depicts an Ireland of times gone by, and perhaps an Ireland that never truly was. Nevertheless, the culture is saturated in fairy-tales and ghost stories, and everyone seems to believe.

A love letter to simple village life, and to the power of storytelling, and the Emerald Isle's vibrant and exuberant folklore. Well-acted (except for Janet Munro, who seems to always be reading cue cards), lushly photographed, and the special effects hold up VERY well in these days of overly obvious CGI. If you're Irish, or just enjoy a good fairy tale, or a good ghost story, then this is for you. Not to be missed!

Darby (Albert Sharpe) is always telling tales about local folklore. Soon he finds out that the tales he tells are real and must take the consequences as he meets the king of little people (Jimmy O'Dea) and confronts a banshee.

I grew up with this film and it was not until much later that I realized that Sean Connery ...Michael McBride was the 007 guy. Everything is so fascinating when you are young. And the special effects are superb for the time. However I did have to take time to get over the banshee.
