Review

Of all the man vs. animal flicks out there, not many come close to matching the sheer absurdity of Orca: The Killer Whale. Hot on the heels of Jaws' immense success, this killer-whale opus updates the Moby Dick mythos and turns the celebrated tale on its ear while hyping up the idiotic psychic link between Richard Harris' Ahab character and the pissed off water-bound mammal. Over-the-top imagery is pushed at the viewer from the fourth minute on, as a great white shark surrounds a boat only to be bonked to death by Orca, who's soon to be a grieving whale widower hell-bent on kicking some Irish thespian butt. As his revenging rampage rolls along, Orca chomps limbs and destroys everything from a fleet of fishing vessels to an entire house and even an oil refinery. There are plenty of deaths before the big showdown at the end, where Harris and the roaring Orca take still pictures of each other with their eyes and face off one last time. As one can tell, it's all pretty silly stuff and only for the connoisseurs of schlock cinema, who will no doubt eat up the proceedings like the pure junk seafood it is. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

4.0 out of 5 stars Cinematography and Score Make this Movie Beautfiul, July 5 2004

Much like Battlestar Galactica wouldn't have been made without Star Wars, Orca would not exist if it hadn't been for Jaws. But that really doesn't matter. The movie has its merits. It has a great cast: Richard Harris, Keenan Wynn, Charlotte Rampling, Will Sampson, Robert Carradine, Bo Derek (well, she looks good!). Most importantly, it has Gorgeous cinematography and Ennio Morricone's haunting score. What a great piece of music he created for this film. There are very few creatures as amazing as the killer whale. When you see them swimming and swooping magnificently about in the ocean to Morricone's music you will see what is so great about this movie. I've loved it since I was a child and I'm glad that it's breathtaking visuals and sound will be given DVD-quality presentation. It isn't the most original script to come along, but it's a beatiful film.

4.0 out of 5 stars See it for yourself., Jan 31 2007
By Kerrio (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
Orca is often compared to the movie Jaws. WHile I admit there are some similarities, there are quite a few important distinctions. While I myself am a fan of both movie, I don't think that any admirer of the Jaws movies will be an instant fan of Orca. There are haunting qualities about this movie. While the typical Jaws veiwer roots for the hunters, fearful of the shark, the typical Orca viewer roots for the whale! I mean... the people in this film really got what was coming to them. Anyway, I think that this is one of those films that has to be seen to be understood. Sure, its corny... in fact its pretty much the epitome of a corny horror flick but in my opinion those are the BEST kinds of horror films.

By Justin Bidgood (Newfoundland, Canada) - See all my reviews
WEll when I first saw the movie "Orca" it was while I was home one night with my dad. He just went out to the movie store and rented it,But the main reason he rented it was because his entire family including himself were extras in it. The scene where evryone is standing on the point watching the fishing boat leave he and his family are standing in the crowd. The movie was shot in my home town Petty Harbour where i still live today....The movie was good!
