Product Description

Review

Coffee and Cigarettes is a fond celebration of casual conversation and minor vices, and despite the fact that it takes place all over the country, it has a distinctly New York vibe. While the collection of vignettes offers a few great pleasures, in the context of Jim Jarmusch's oeuvre, it is slight. Things get off to a bumpy start with Stephen Wright trying to work some standup into a forced encounter with a surprisingly low-key Roberto Benigni. Then Steve Buscemi does a bad Southern accent, and the charismatic Tom Waits pretends to be a doctor to impress Iggy Pop. The black-and-white images are appealing, but there's a general sense of pointless goofing in these early sequences. The film doesn't begin to hit its stride until about 30 minutes in, when actors Isaach de Bankol and Alex Descas meet for a prolonged misunderstanding. The film's strongest segment, funny and surprisingly trenchant, features the redoubtable Cate Blanchett in a dual role as a Hollywood actress and her ne'er-do-well cousin. Another wonderfully acted segment covers similar territory, as a daft Alfred Molina forces the hilariously blas Steve Coogan to navigate the hierarchy of showbiz success. Coogan's mere pronunciation of the words "Boogie Nights" is worth the price of admission. Jarmusch's project started as an emptily hip short film commissioned by Saturday Night Live, but by the time it ends, with a burst of nostalgic melancholy featuring Taylor Mead and Bill Rice, it has successfully transcended its origins. As it breezes through the touchstones of the filmmaker's career, Coffee and Cigarettes is a must-see for the filmmaker's fans. Others should find it a pleasant and amusing way to pass a little time in good company. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

4.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Experiment, Dec 28 2004
By J. Pinkerton Snoopington (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Jim Jarmusch's "Coffee and Cigarettes" is a strange but interesting experiment. It is comprised of about a dozen short skits of people in restaurants talking (obviously to the accompaniment of the title addictions). Some of the highlights include an amusing pairing of Bill Murray and the Wu Tang Clan, a strange encounter between Roberto Benigni and Steven Wright, a marvelously acted piece between Cate Blanchette and herself in a dual role as her cousin, and, best of all, a sad and funny scene with Steve Coogan and Alfred Molina. While the pieces aren't particularly satisfying on their own, as a whole, they make up a fascinating study of human nature, not to mention some fine entertainment.
The DVD from MGM has the film in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The black and white image is very good looking with few scratches and little grain. The extra features are a theatrical trailer, shots of tabletops, an interview with actor Taylor Meade, and an unfortunately short blooper with Bill Murray. Far more interesting than any of these would have been an interview with Jarmusch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool, Dec 29 2005
By Manuel (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
I like this movie. Its a movie that doesn't ask much of you but to listen.

These conversations sound completely real. Its like we are sitting in on real people discussing boring things. "Are you sure there is nothing wrong?" and of course we never know the real answer to that question.

Its hit and miss though, it gets really good with Blanchett's scene and rolls through easily from there.

just watch it, cool movie.
