Review

The first decade of the 21st century -- having no other defining cinematic characteristic -- may go down as the decade when Hollywood ran out of ideas, unleashing a torrent of wanton remakes. Around the World in 80 Days is the latest to come down the chute, and it's been redesigned as a Jackie Chan film. The problem is, it needed to be much more of a Jackie Chan film to be watchable over two long hours. Save a few trademark Chan maneuvers -- such as a delightful skirmish with canvas and paint, during which Chan ducks and weaves his way to a masterpiece -- the film drags painfully between set pieces that rely on Steve Coogan for their spark. Coogan does get off a couple witty one-liners as the priggish Phileas Fogg, but the script neutralizes them by continuing to reuse them throughout, in slightly altered form. By his mere participation in the film, Coogan squanders the indie credibility he earned as music impresario Tony Wilson in 24 Hour Party People, reminding audiences he's just an actor looking for a healthy paycheck. Cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger (after taking office as governor) and a handful of others are equally lame and lifeless. The main reason to take the journey, aside from a fairly opulent set and visual sense, is French actress Ccile De France in her English-language debut. A cross between Brittany Murphy and Alicia Silverstone, De France exudes spunky charm every moment she's on screen. Anyone familiar with her work in the bloody French film Haute Tension will also be surprised at her adaptability. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide

2.0étoiles sur 5 Chan Good, Disney Bad, Fév 19 2009

The good news about this film is that it stars the always hilarious Jackie Chan and is quite funny. The bad news is that it was done by Disney.

Disney has alway treated its sources arrogantly and callously, acting as if could `do better' than a writer beloved by generations of kids. J. R. R. Tolkien noticed that in the 1930s, and shuddered at the thought that his tales might get their treatment. More recently, Disney abused Prince Caspian, by Tolkien's friend C. S. Lewis, remaking it into something they thought would do better with kids, resulting in mediocre performance at the box office and an agreement between them and Walden Media, that Disney would play no role in subsequent Narnia films. Good riddance.

In this case, Disney's victim is Jules Verne and his 1873 classic, Around the World in Eighty Days. The original is so heavily altered for the worst, that almost the only parallel to the original is the fact that both involve someone circling the world of the late 1800s in 80 days. Disney should have had enough integrity not to steal Verne's title and prestige for their own tale.

Even the essence has been altered by the too-clever-by-half twits at Disney. Verne loved science and pioneered science fiction as new form of literature. Almost all the scientists in this Disney perversion are corrupt, blundering or stupid. That and a plot that isn't good for children, reflecting too much of what passes for `values' in Hollywood, makes this a film parents might want to take a pass on.

5.0étoiles sur 5 This is fun!, Sep 18 2008
After reading that the movie bombed at the box office, I didn't expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the mix of Monty Pythonesque and Cantonese humour. The gadgets were fabulous as were the locations. The actors jelled well together and obviously enjoyed themselves. To me this is a nice hidden gem I'll be happy to enjoy for myself if others don't "get it".

3.0étoiles sur 5 This is not a remake, it is a loosely based on, Janv. 20 2008

This version of Jules Verne's original story "Around the World in 80 Days" takes so many liberties with the story that the only thing recognizable is a few names.

It is shame that we leave our youth with the impression that Disney and Jules Verne have any thing in common.

That being said and ignoring that this is a contrived jumble of clichés and no social redeeming value, every once in a while there is a cute zinger or one liner. One such inference was when Lord Salisbury was told that they were going to name a meat entrée after him.

A major negative for Jules and a plus for Disney is the addition of Jackie Chan. This is probably one of Jackie's best performances as he bloodlessly gets to hop around Chaplin style.

A real plus is the filming location in the former East Germany and Thailand makes for exceptionally interesting visuals.

Bottom line is this is a good time filler and can be amusing but do not get this presentation mixed up with the Jules Verne story of the same name.
