A treasure-trove for Dream Theater fans, Live at Budokan presents an entire three-hour performance at Tokyo's famed Budokan arena on April 26, 2004, along with a bonus disc rich in supplementary material. Disc 1 finds the metallic progressive-rock quintet at its awe-inspiring best, plowing through its catalog of dramatic epics and jack-hammer instrumentals, including five of the seven songs from 2003's Train of Thought. Disc 2 features an extended drum solo from percussionist extraordinaire Mike Portnoy; gear tours from guitarist John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess (fascinating for lay people and downright revelatory for musicians); and a half-hour documentary on DT's 2004 stint in Japan punctuated by tantalizing snippets of band rehearsals. The shooting and editing for the concert are a music lover's dream, with lengthy shots that linger on the performances of individual band members. Disc 2 takes this even further with a multi-angle sequence of the 12-minute "Instrumedley."

Production values are extremely high: it's a widescreen presentation shot on high-def video and nicely mixed for multichannel Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound (with a thinner, collapsed version of the same for Dolby 2.0). --Michael Mikesell

This DVD is superb! DT takes you through 18 live songs at the legendary Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo. The perfermances are flawless and sound is excellent. The Bonus DVD is also fantastic featuring a tour documentary, Guitar/Keyboard Worlds, DT Chronicles and Mike's Drum Solo. You will not be dissapointed with this DVD. Lata H.

After a month of the original release, It's interesting to give new comentaries about this DVD. First of all, I think Dream Theater did an incredible job. The stage, the lights, the sound, everything is there to give us an unforgettable show. For that reason, for an incredible rate perfection, the wish to have a different setlist came in my mind. Yes, the setlist is very very good. It's almost perfect from the last albums, since Falling into Infinity to Train of Thought. But, it's true something is missing from the old songs. I'm agree to put more news songs we never have seen played on a home video. But it will be so nice, to have the best songs from the three first albums. It wasn't hard, just one song for each album. If you can have "Killing Hand", "Learning to Live" and "Scarred", it can be the best Dream Theater song list in one package ever. Honestly, "Pull me under" doesn't have his place on this concert and "Only a matter a time" isn't the most wanted song from "When dream and day unite". And it will be great to have the "6 degrees" song entirely from start to finish, instead to do it by parts. Anyway, it depends the preferences of each fans. The concert is so great, it will be difficult to do better.

Live at Budokan is simply great. The band is in top form and it's a 3 hour tour de force. The show was wonderfully shot and the screens with the images being projected were so much better compared the corny images on the Metropolis DVD. The bonus disc is great also. Especially the old footage of the band waaaaay back in the day when they were still wet behind the ears. Also known as Majesty :-P That was a real treat to see. The documentary was great also. Kind of glad that John Petrucci didn't fall asleep on stage for too long. :-P This is the best live Dream Theater DVD and or CD that i've ever purchased. Go and BUY IT!!!
