The first and only spin-off of Babylon 5, J. Michael Straczynski's short-lived sci-fi series Crusade had its roots in the B5 television movie A Call to Arms, in which Earth was battling a Drakh invasion at the end of the Shadow Wars. When Crusade begins, the Drakh have released a deadly virus that threatens to wipe out all 10 billion humans living on Earth unless a cure can be found in five years. To take on this monumental task, Captain Matthew Gideon (Gary Cole) is assigned command of the state-of-the-art Destroyer-class ship Excalibur. His crew includes telepath John Matheson (Daniel Dae Kim); pompous but brilliant archaeologist-linguist Max Eilerson (David Allen Brooks); Dureena, a member of the Thieves' Guild and the last surviving member of her species (Carrie Dobro); medical officer Sarah Chambers (Marjean Holden); and technomage Galen (Peter Woodward).

While Babylon 5 had five years to develop into a powerful saga, Crusade had its plug pulled after a mere 13 episodes (which were reordered for TNT's broadcast), and the series never really got its footing. Galen often took center stage, then disappeared for several episodes. Matheson was underutilized (other than to provide fans with clues about what happened in the Psi-Wars after B5 ended), and tough-guy Gideon bounced back and forth between his desire to save the human race and his own moral code. There were some good action scenes and intriguing concepts (developed in conjunction with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory). Special effects sometimes were impressive and sometimes showed budget constraints, and we never really saw the power and scope of the mile-and-a-half-long ship, other than the cool bullet cars used to traverse its length. But it did have its moments. If B5 was the spiritual companion to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with its space-station setting and long story arc, Crusade was more like a traditional Star Trek setting, with mostly stand-alone episodes involving first contact with various species (even if, due to the nature of the Excalibur's quest, such species were usually extinct). And there were occasional tantalizing hints of a broader conspiracy that might have allowed the series to soar. Regardless, B5 fans will welcome even a brief opportunity to revisit this universe, especially when the Excalibur visits the station in "The Rules of the Game." John Sheridan's ex-wife Captain Elizabeth Lochley (Tracy Scoggins) even earned a spot in the opening credits for her appearance in a few episodes. --David Horiuchi

2267 A.D. The battle is won, the war may be lost. After fending off the fierce attack of Drakh combatants, Earth faces an unseen yet even greater foe - a microbial, biogenetic plague that will destroy all life on the planet in five years if a cure isn't found. Crusade follows the race against time to find that cure - an urgent and hazardous quest that sends an Earthforce expedition across the reaches of space to explore technologies more advanced than Earth's. Leading this high-stakes archeological mission is a starship of the new Interstellar Alliance, the Excalibur, and its crew drawn from the Alliance's elite troubleshooting corps, the Rangers. With 7 billion lives at stake, action and courage against insurmountable odds must prevail in this Crusade.

Overall, this spin off does not compare to the original Babylon 5. I am a huge fan of the original.
It's easy to see why this show was canceled. In almost every episode you will see some poor thinking and ends that just don't tie up. For example, the menacing drakh seen in the original are nothing but a man walking in a rubberized suit, which pale in comparison. They use a handgun to destroy a spaceship!!! Then, you are left wondering why is John Sheridan's wife in the series, since her purpose is nothing but romance the new captain. She does nothing else! Characters make rather interesting situations completely boring, such as when a scene reveals that same woman floating in space on a damaged star fury, running out of oxygen and the suspense is built up. Then, after she is rescued, she casually comments that she was shot down by pirates in the area! As you reflect back on Babylon 5 series, any B5 captain has always made it out ok from pirates, and this stands out as stupid. On top of that, the CGI is so-so and even the original B5 graphics look far superior. This is a budget series, hands down.
To add insult to injury, everything in this series fails to inspire. Battles in space are just silly, as excalibur never takes any damage at all and you are left wondering why didn't it just eliminate the entire drakh race all by itself. Characters are likewise uninspiring and fail to involve you personally. In original, chars act like real people, with emotions, poetic script, but here, no poetic script is given and you never want to associate with any of the chars, as they make horrible decisions, like descending on a planet which they suspect to be contaminated by a virus, while not wearing the environmental suits to protect themselves and it turns out that they are infected with a virus. This is just silly. Ohh and the into, is downright annoying!
To it's credit, some episodes are actually fascinating with interesting side plots, and the main story is descent. There is some good humour in occasional episode and occasionally chars surprise you by showing some intelect in their decisions!
Still, series as a whole is a complete joke and I am unhappy that it's over so soon, without completing the story, but I am happy that the horribly done show is put to rest.

Crusade became what could easily have happened to Babylon 5,something of great potential cut off before it could really get going.
Luckily for Babylon 5 fans it survived its' five year tenure.Unfortunately Crusade did not.But what potential there was for this series.It had all the same key ingredients;great scripts,great acting,great CGI and great background score by Mr.Chen(who did Call to Arms-a bold but worthwhile gamble).I have never heard the hows and whys of this series demise nor what was in store for the series had it continued.I can only speculate that Mr.Straczynski probably envisioned a similar story arc as B-5 and maybe within the same time period(?).The evidence is resplendent throughout Crusade;
Capt.Gideon(hand picked by Sheridan) uses Sheridans' ship the Excaliber(from a Call to Arms)to go searching for a cure for the Drakh plague on Earth(will they succeed or fail?),they visit the Mars Colony(maybe we would have eventually seen Garibaldi?),Gideon not only meets with Capt.Lochley on B-5 he,well,gets closerthanthis with her(would it be permanent or fleeting?),Dereena Nefil finds a lost tribe of her own kind(they have only a year to live,could she save them!?),Galen comes and goes throughout(does he visit Sheridan,B-5 station or ?, when not with Gideon?),Dr.Franklin(from B-5)is stuck on Earth working from there(will he work more closely with the Ex's crew?),the inevitable telepath wars took place,ended and one of the Ex's crew is a former psi-cop(would we see Mr.Bester reappear?),etc,etc.
I can only conclude that Mr.Straczynski's story arc,if he had this in mind, would have definitely come around to meld with the B-5 universe because Crusade,when all said and done,was just a more thoroughly explored extension of Babylon 5 anyways.
The minuses to this set are as follows:
The set includes very little in the way of extras.Just a few interspersed commentaries and a couple of short featurettes which I am going to watch now that I have finished all the episodes.
It is not filmed in widescreen like the majority of B-5 was.
The price tag for just 13 eps(and what little is included) is very high....much too high.
That's why this set will be bought I think mainly by those who can afford it/and or B-5 compleatists.It is certainly a worthy edition to any B-5 fans' collection.But it is ultimately frustrating to watch knowing even though it widens our scope of the B-5 universe a little more it leaves behind a ton of open ended questions.
We can only hope that Mr.Straczynskis' recent "Lost Tales" DVD can kick start the B-5 universe up again so hopefully we can get some kind of closure on the Crusade take on things.There's always hope.

I enjoyed this show when it first came out and I'm glad we were able to get it on DVD.
The actors all interact very well with each other. The ship is awesome, episodes are well written and the special effects are extemely well done.
Thank you JMS for giving us another well thought out story.
Just one nit, I would have liked to have seen them in the order that JMS intended them to be rather TNT's version. But I'm still happy to have it.
