Product Description

Review

For all of Jonathan Demme's formidable skill behind the camera, his greatest talent is his ability to utilize close-ups. His innate humanism, his interest in whomever he films, comes through every time Denzel Washington's anxious face fills the frame in The Manchurian Candidate. This film only works if the viewer feels Marco's anxiety, paranoia, and frustration. Washington communicates these things with the smallest of facial tics and the subtlest shifts in his eyes. Demme's camera captures every moment of a nuanced, controlled performance that keeps the audience with the film, even when it goes into situations where it becomes harder and harder to suspend disbelief. Liev Schreiber matches Washington's minimalist intensity, and he also benefits from Demme's sympathetic, observant camera. Fine turns from Meryl Streep, Kimberly Elise, and the woefully underappreciated Jeffrey Wright all offer up engaging performances that gain from Demme's fearless love of faces. Those familiar with the original film version of Richard Condon's book may be surprised by some of the changes in this version. Demme and his screenwriters have more or less eliminated the black humor of the original, and they have altered some of the film's major plotlines. These changes all work within this film and help allow it to stand up against any comparison with the original. Anybody familiar with Demme's politics will know what he has to say on the subject of the war on terror, but anybody familiar with Demme's films should also be confident that the politics never once compromise or overwhelm the story. The Manchurian Candidate is a well-made, intelligent summer popcorn film anchored by the compelling face of Denzel Washington. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

3.0 out of 5 stars the original is much better (2.6/5), May 29 2009

this remake of the 1962 classic leaves a lot to be desired.it doesn't
live up to the original.the plot is just too hard to follow,in my
opinion.it's not straight forward at all.it's suspenseful and
dramatic, but not really all that exciting.i didn't care much about the
characters here.in the original,i felt really invested in the
characters.it was much more clever,and psychological.Meryl Streep is a
fine actress, but the character was played to much better effect by
Angela Lansbury in the original.the same can be said of the characters
portrayed by Denzel Washington and Liev Schreiber.Sinatra played the
same character as Schreiber and Laurence Harvey played the same
character as Washington.to be fair,it could be that the characters
were written better in the original, which i think is the case.bottom
line, this version pales in comparison to the original.my vote for The
Manchurian Candidate (2004) is a 2.6/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Well acted, well executed., Oct 4 2007

This movie could have been bad. The original almost never saw the light of day because of the Kennedy Assassination. And when it finally was released, it was instantly hailed as a classic.

This re-make updates the premise with modern involvement in Iraq and modern allusions to a corrupt government with too many associations with big business. Where even the presidency can be for hire.

Somehow this movie does not weigh itself down with too much political commentary, but remains a study of the characters that inhabit it. It is a thriller first, commentary second.

This High Definition movie has little to offer in the way of extra features, but makes up for it with a beautiful high definition transfer of the film, and an enveloping DTS surround sound.

I'm glad I own it, because this is a title that has to be seen over and over again.
