Product Description

From Amazon.com

Yoga for plus-sized women? Why not, especially when it's presented clearly, simply, and utterly without condescension, which is the case with Just My Size Yoga. Instructor Megan Garcia, a large woman herself, knows that self-consciousness and limitations due to shape and size keep many would-be yoga practitioners from attending actual classes; hence this 45-minute program designed to introduce new students to yoga's many benefits. Garcia promises that a regular yoga practice will promote not only physical well-being (including energy and flexibility) but also confidence, calm, and what she calls "an inner sense of self"--ambitious goals, to be sure, but also attainable ones. The practice consists of three parts. The warm-up focuses on the breath, along with arm lifts, spinal twists, and such; the "workout" section includes some reasonably demanding poses like Warrior 1 and 2 and downward-facing dog (after demonstrating each pose separately, Garcia repeats them as one continuous, flowing sequence), and "deep relaxation" consists of savasana, the so-called "corpse pose." Other elements of Just My Size Yoga include a "special tips" section (with suggestions about using a wall, chairs, or other props to modify the poses) and an interview with Garcia. All in all, this is a gentle, easy, yet effective introduction to yoga. --Sam Graham

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a yoga workout for the plus size woman, Jan 13 2008
By Vynne (Canada) - See all my reviews
I have been trying for a while to find a yoga workout that is gentle enough for someone who is trying to get back into exercise, increase flexibility, and recover from a back injury. I have tried in-person yoga classes, but while the first couple of classes would be great, by the 3rd or 4th class, I had to modify the poses, and in later classes the moves would have progressed so much that I wasn't able to do anything that resembled the actual pose. It just resulted in a feeling of self-consciousness and shame.

Here is a workout that is designed for people who desire the benefits of yoga but are not aspiring to be contortionists and who may be nervous about attending a yoga studio in person. Some poses covered include:
Cat and Dog
Mountain
Warrior 1 and 2
Goddess and 5 pointed Star
Child's pose
Downward dog

The routine is not strenuous, but the poses cause my muscles to work to maintain balance, and the combination of mindful breathing and stretching result in a nice warm mind-body connection.

There is a section that shows modifications for certain poses, and I had to use the wall for the Downward Dog and a cushion for the Child's Pose, but I was able to feel the energy of the poses and the modifications were easily incorporated into the routine.

The voiceover instructions cue well and are pleasant to listen to. The workout is a comfortable length to do every day, and I feel centred and energized afterwards, which makes it easier to stick to doing the "right" things like eating healthy!

Thank you to Megan for filling a niche for yoga instruction for plus size girls (and guys!). She is inspiring and I will definitely be ordering the Mega Yoga book as well. I hope she puts out more yoga/workout DVD's soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gentle yet effective, April 5 2007
By S. Oxner (Nova Scotia, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This was my first exerpience with yoga. As I am a larger person I was afraid I might have some difficulty trying to do a regular yoga routine.
Most of what Megan demonstrates are the real yoga poses, but under the DVD menu she does have a chapter showing various modifications you can do if you have limited flexibility due to your size.
All of the positions are clearly shown, and the voice-over instructions are easy to follow.
As I was doing the program, it didn't feel like I was "doing" much, but it was relaxing, which I know is part of doing yoga. However, by later that day I was feeling it in my abs and obliques...and I'm not new to exercise by any means!
I certainly enjoyed this DVD and would recommend it to any larger person wanting to try yoga but were afraid to due to their limited flexibility. This prgram takes that excuse away.
