Product Description

From Amazon.com

Wisconsin lumberman Barney Glasgow (Edward Arnold) makes his fortune by marrying his business associate's daughter to cinch a lucrative partnership, thereby sacrificing the one he truly loves, Lotta Morgan (Frances Farmer). Lotta marries Barney's close pal Swan Bostrom (Walter Brennan) and they beget Lotta Bostrom (also Frances Farmer) who bears a striking resemblance to her mother. Years later, when the elder Lotta is no longer with us, Barney and his son (Joel McCrea) both fall for the young Lotta, causing Barney to work out his troubling sense of loss. This rousing loggers melodrama was the one and only true showcase for the talents of Frances Farmer, who is superb in the dual role of the mother and daughter Lottas (and for a fledgling actor, that's a lotta Lottas), and who would later be made more famous by the biopics based on her life. Co-directed by Howard Hawks (who discovered Farmer, and was ousted from the film when he was rude to producer Samuel Goldwyn) and William Wyler. --Jim Gay

Review

Come and Get It is a mostly-forgotten adaptation of Edna Ferber's sprawling novel; when it is remembered, it's usually for containing one of the rare performances by the tragically fated Frances Farmer. Farmer's work here is certainly worth remembering; she pulls off the difficult trick of playing a mother and a daughter with ease and reveals the charisma that might have made her a major star, had her personal problems not intervened. Modern viewers who have heard of her but never actually seen her acting will be fascinated, but they'll probably also be surprised to find that hers is not the film's best performance. That goes hands down to Edward Arnold, whose powerhouse presence dominates the film. It's a rich performance, filled with subtle touches that greatly enhance the character and the film. By contrast, Walter Brennan's Oscar-winning performance comes across today as good, but not special. The film itself is uneven, largely because two people officially directed it. (A third handled the eye-popping logging sequence.) The hand of Howard Hawks is very much in evidence during the more masculine first half, while the more sensitive second half seems to bear William Wyler's touch -- but neither man is operating at the top of his game. Blame the screenplay, which is over-plotted and melodramatic, more interested in wringing out emotions than in pulling them up honestly. Fortunately, the cast makes up for many of these deficiencies, with the result that Come and Get It is imminently watchable, if not great cinema. ~ Craig Butler, All Movie Guide

4.0 out of 5 stars Why so expensive?, May 27 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Come and Get It (DVD)
I feel like the sellers are holding this movie for ransom. WHO is going to pay that much money for a movie (DVD) that no one remembers? It would be better for a Frances Farmer fan to have and enjoy rather than sit and collect dust on the shelf. I guess I'll instead be ordering the VHS copy for cheap.

Arnold plays a self-made empire builder who fights his way to the top in a Wisconsin lumber business. The acting is generally superlative in the this typically sprawling Edna Ferber epic; the ultimately tragic Frances Farmer is truly impressive in her dual roles (this film preserves her best screen work) while Brennan is great as Swan (he won his first supporting AA for this). The film was released in England as ROARING TIMBER.
