Synopsis

This performance of Yuri Grigorovich's original ballet Ivan the Terrible - which uses the Sergei Profokiev film score from the two Eisenstein films, Ivan The Terrible, Pt. 1 and Ivan the Terrible, Part II (in addition to original compositions by Mikhail Chulaki) -- was recorded at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1990. The production stars Irek Mukhamedov in the title role of Ivan IV, Czar of Russia; Natalya Bessmertnova as Anastasia, his wife; and Gediminas Taranda as Prince Kurbsky. Ivan - a production of The Bolshoi Ballet -- features accompaniment by The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra and The Children's Choir of the Bolshoi Theatre. This is definitely the version to chose if you just want one in your collection.

I bought the Ballet de l'Opera (National de Paris) version first. Although I enjoyed it, I found something missing until I bought the Bolshoi's version of the same ballet. As soon as the orchestra start to play, you know you are in for a real treat. The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra is so much better at playing the Prokofiev's score that you will be drawn into the story in no time. The dancers are definitely better from the principle dancers right down to the corps de ballet. The Bolshoi version is simply heart pounding and exciting to watch.

I alway like Paris Opera Ballet and have many in my collection but somehow their version of Ivan the Terrible is just like an impression of the real thing. The Orchestra is just not up to playing the score like the Bolshoi did. Both Nicolas Le Riche and Eleonora Abbagnato are very good in the title roles of Ivan and Anastasia but the same could not be said of the rest of the French company.

You will be thrilled by Irek Mukhamedov playing the role of Ivan and a more believable Prince Kurbsky by Gediminas Taranda in characteriztion. Natalya Bessmertnona was a bit old to the part but makes a more passionate Anastasia in Bolshoi's production than the techically stronger Eleonora Abbagnato in the French production.
