Description

I probably would have given Earth 2 a 4 or 4.5 star rating, but I feel I have to help compensate for the last reviewer (and only other one on here so far) who gave it such an undeserved poor review. I think Earth 2 was a show well ahead of its time. It is a fascinating concept, which becomes an epic journey across this alien world and also a journey into the hearts and minds of the characters.

The acting in the series was outstanding, and the scripts gave a lot of material to almost all of the actors, at different times. The story concepts varied as the show went along, partly due to this being a series trying to find its feet. While the last reviewer didn't enjoy the variety in the story concepts, I did - to me this represents the journey on this alien world, where things are not always as they seem and adventures come in unexpected ways.

The special effects were mostly minimal through a lot of episodes, but the effects in the Pilot episode alone are worthy of an outstanding rating. The aliens were mysterious, fascinating, realistic, and ALIEN - exactly what they should have been. The cinematography was always a highlight - this is a beautifully staged and filmed series.

The thing about Earth 2 is that it's a bit of a thinking person's sci-fi series. You have to be in it for the long haul, and have an attention span longer than 45 minutes, to really be able to appreciate the subtleties and potential of the program. I do highly recommend it to those who have fond memories, and also to those who enjoy a good, involving sci-fi adventure. I wish Earth 2 had been given longer to find its way, but as it is it's a show treasured by a dedicated fan following, and so ultimately it was a success and lives on with each of us who enjoys watching it. I hope you'll enjoy watching Earth 2, also!

I bought this item because I remembered watching it and enjoying it when I was a kid. I didn't remember much of what it was about, but it looked like it would be worth a shot. I was wrong, the acting is poor and the dialog was even worse. The twists and story are far too predictable to follow. The overall concept of the show is a great idea, but they failed at targeting a specific audience.

Quickly: Not nearly as good as I remembered. Not even close.

Summary: a short lived series that came out when I was a Kid that my Mom loved and I remember rather liking myself. Colonists from Earth travel to a distant planet as the initial wave, sent to set things up for the 2million to follow. Ship is sabotaged, most of the crew dies, small group left on forign world trying to make the trek to the original landing site and get things ready for future colonists. The entire story revolves around this group and thier interactions with the enviroment, silly aliens and each other.

The good: The premise is a good one, it sounds like a good story from the summary didn't it? Some of the characters and they way they are played is excellent. I am a big fan of the Danzinger and Morgan characters and would love to see more of them. The two main races of aliens are interesting. They definatly feel alien, which is a nice touch. Not just humans with silly masks (though they do look silly, the charcterization is not). A few of the episodes were rather good and worth watching. The pilot especially. The entire show was better then the preview episode of Cleopatra 2525 on the bonus disk.

The bad: the premise was good by the story wasn't. It was a great concept but is totally contrived and butchered. It gets worse as it goes on instead of better. I swear they got new writers each episode and told them do what they want with it, and they did. This makes for a retarded story where each writer adds their own quirks to it and really just messes with the realism and believability of the show. The aliens and other special effects aren't so special. I know this show was is old, but it looks bad even for that time. 90% of episodes could have been set anywhere, they had such a weak tie in to the plot and setting that they could have easily been transported into any other show. You have this group stranded on an alien world, but then make them camp out in the woods and explore isolationism. Just no point in it. The deserted planet was filled with all kinds of people. It first started with just Aliens, then prison colonists (actually liked that addition) then they just kept finding more and more people. An entire city of people living underground, a crashed ship from years past, some scientists living in a bio dome, etc. The DVD special features were incrably lame and weak. Whe you buy a season of something you expect more then a few minutes of outakes, some deleted scenes and adds for other TV series.

The Ugly: Special effects mentioned above belong here, oops. The rediculous amount of corny things! In one outake one of the actors is having trouble with thier lines due to how corny they are. I would have to guess this would have been a regular occurance on the show. Some of the episodes were just dumb. Really really dumb. I would rather watch the Vulcan Zombie episode of Enterprize then see these again. There was one episode with a Wormhole like tunell that was created by positive and negative energy spiders on webs in caves. If a positive spider bit you you fell in love with the first person you see, if a negative you wanted to kill them. It was the dumbest thing I have ever seen in my life. Actually I think I can save some typing and just say: This was not a good show, it's a good thing it was cancelled, I didn't even feel like finishing the one season we had.

Summary: I don't care how much you liked this in the past, it wasn't that good and does not stand up now. This is not a Firefly, a great sci-fi that no one watched and got cancelled. This was a show that people watched, then stopped watching for a reason.
