Product Description

Album Description

Blending smooth , mainstream rock grooves with moody pop vocals and the subtle intensity of alt/rock guitars, Dan Rothery presents a timeless sound at once both modern and reminiscent of unforgettable melodies. Sometimes empowering, occasionally sad, and often thematic, Dan's composition and vocal impression defy genre classification and offer superb crossover potential, and yet remain accessible to mainstream pop/rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars modern, thematic, catchy, mainstream, unique. get this!, Aug 8 2005
This review is from: Accidental (Audio CD)
Almost never do you encounter solid songwriting anymore in western music, especially in the pop/rock genre. Dan Rothery's CD was a lot more than I expected; not only does he have the guts to actually break away from the standard radio format on many tracks, but he also - brace yourself - writes in poetic lyrics that actually are worth reading!

Dan songs are intelligent and thought-provoking while at the same time catchy enough to have me singing back the choruses, particuarly in songs such as "Accidental Kisses", a medium tempo hooky song with a film soundtrack feel, "Out On Our Own", an upbeat sad/happy/angry rock song, and "Can't Go Home", a deep and timeless ballad. Another excellent track is "Scattered Heart", a brooding, intense, almost bitter tune in which the lyrics often blur into raw emotion, and I was left with the impression that the singer was creating the words spontaneously in an endless stream of expression. There is no "filler" material; every one of the songs seems to have been independantly produced with the intention of creating a single. While this is in itself rare enough, Dan has even gone the next step, incorporating the songs into a "thematic" backdrop, with sound effects to transition between songs and what appears to be a logical progression from one track to the next; this style of "album-writing" is reminiscent of Radiohead and Pink Floyd, and is far too rare in commercial CD products.

Despite references to classic and thematic albums, Accidental actually has a very modern sound, with drop vocals, guttural rock guitars often emerging from the background, and even punchy loops in songs such as "Off Center" and "Underhanded", pushing the overall feel of the CD firmly into the mainstream (though some may well prefer to call it alternative pop or even progressive).

I highly recommend this CD...a lot of love has gone into this music, and it will be enjoyed time and time again. I hope to hear Dan more on the radio; if radio is ready for this innovative fusion of genres. I'd guess we listeners are.
