Description

Not quite a children's show, The Pee-Wee Herman Show is slyly subversive, a little bit naughty and always outrageous. Making its premiere as a midnight show on February 7th, 1981, at The Groundlings Theatre in Hollywood, the performance then moved to the famed Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip where it was filmed as part of HBO's new series On Location. Conceived as an homage to children's television programs of the 1950's and 60's, this live stage production features original music, puppets, a cartoon, a short educational film and Pee-wee's hilarious live-action friends.

Synopsis

Paul Reubens' Pee-Wee Herman character first attracted widespread notice as a result of this HBO special, which preceded both the Tim Burton-directed film Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and the Peabody Award-winning children's series Pee-Wee's Playhouse. A filmed document of Herman's nightclub show, the performance is an obvious precursor to the later kids' TV series, and features many of the same characters, including Captain Carl (Phil Hartman) and Jombi the Genie (John Paragon); still, the humor is considerably more risqu and adult than the later Herman projects. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Movie Guide

I used to rent this movie weekly and my friends and I would laugh almost to the point of suffocation every time. The high point for me is definitely the 50's era personal hygiene film "mr bungle". I can't wait for this to come out on dvd.
