Product Description

From Amazon.com

In this sequel to The Shaggy Dog, Wilby Daniels (Dean Jones) has grown up and married Suzanne Pleshette, and has a young son. When the family comes home to find the house cleaned out by "movers"--who Daniels knows are protected by the corrupt District Attorney John Slade (Keenan Wynn)--he decides to run against Slade in the next election. Meanwhile, hoodlums connected to the same crime syndicate get hold of the mystical ring that turns poor Daniels (via mid-'70s special effects) into Elwood, the dog owned by the local ice-cream vendor (Tim Conway). Lots of chase scenes, a little roller derby action, and some cherry pie throwing complicate both Daniels's bid for office and his quest to remain a human being. Kids will enjoy the last half of this 91-minute movie the most as Daniels spends most of the time in his dog persona and because his son becomes part of the plot to undo the bad guys. This G-rated feature is safe for all ages, but kids probably won't sit through it until age 4 or 5. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Review

The Shaggy Dog was a lightweight but enjoyable and immensely successful high-concept comedy from the Disney studios. The fact it took so long for a sequel is a bit of a surprise. Audiences who enjoyed the original will likely enjoy The Shaggy D.A., as much of it is the same story told with adults rather than children. The sequel lacks some of the innocent charm of the original, as well as the special qualities that Fred MacMurray and Tommy Kirk brought to their work; however, it has better special effects, a slicker quality, and fine work from Suzanne Pleshette, Keenan Wynn, Tim Conway, and Jo Ann Worley to recommend it. As the star, Dean Jones is in good form, but a little mechanical; by this point in his career, he may have felt he had been through all of this before (and with good reason). Still, Jones is amiable as always, good-hearted if stubborn and a bit thick, and he plays well off of the delightful Pleshette. Shaggy D.A. is no great film, but it's pleasant enough. ~ Craig Butler, All Movie Guide

2.0 out of 5 stars a real dog, Nov 2 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
while i didn't mind the original The Shaggy Dog(1959),i thought this
sequel was not too good.i found it way too silly and absurd, and not
realistic.by that,i'm not talking about the premise,a man transforms
into a dog.that i can accept as being within the confines of the
movie.what i found unrealistic was how most of the characters acted and
or reacted.too say there was some overacting going on would be a
massive understatement.i also didn't find the characters endearing.i
did however find them annoying.and the acting in general was
unimpressive.and i found the ending abrupt with no real resolution.i'd
say this would be a good family movie,a family comprised of only 3 year
olds.maybe they ran out of money or time.whatever.this film had none of
the fun or charm of the original.for me,The Shaggy D.A.is a weak 2/5

5.0 out of 5 stars When Disney Was Great - More Extras Please!, Mar 11 2004
By R. Dack "adcomm" (St. Louis Park, MN United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Shaggy D.A. (DVD)
With Dean, Jones, Keenan Wynn, Michael McGreevey and Tim Conway you can't go wrong with these incredible character actors. This is when Disney was great! As far as i'm concerned Disney died after The Rescuers (1978,1979).

Wilby Daniels tries to recover the stolen Borgia ring that transforms him into a dog as he's running for District Atty. Don't miss Conways hilarious scene in the Warehouse with the Security Guard..."the sannifran in the rectafrazzins condensing"

One of my top four fav's from the once-great, no longer palatable Disney Company.

1.0 out of 5 stars I fell asleep watching it, both as a kid and now...
This movie is the slowest and most boring Disney film I ever saw.
The story is stupid, the casting doesn't work, and it shows how bad Disney are at live action films.
