Product Description

From Amazon.com

The direct-to-DVD animated feature Superman: Brainiac Attacks pits Superman against two of his longest-running foes: Lex Luthor and the robotic Brainiac. Luthor's scheme is to re-jigger Brainiac's configuration using a combination of Superman's DNA and a rare form of Kryptonite to make him an unstoppable weapon against the Man of Steel. Fans of TV's Superman: The Animated Series will be pleased to note the return of Tim Daly and Dana Delaney, who reprise their roles as Superman and Lois Lane from the show, but hardcore Superman/Justice League Unlimited viewers may regret the loss of Clancy Brown's formidable performance as Luthor (who is voiced here by Powers Boothe), as well as Corey Burton as Brainiac (here handled by Lance Henriksen). Also missing is the series' adherence to its DC Comics origins and its serious tone, which here is blunted by Duane (The Batman, Jackie Chan Adventures) Capizzi's frothy script, which hews closer to a combination of the Superman films and broad comedy. --Paul Gaita

Review

With all of the pizzazz of the Superman: Animated Series comes this straight-to-DVD feature, Brainiac Attacks -- an explosive adventure that pits the Man of Steel against two of his most feared foes. Grand in its exhilarating fight sequences while true to character in its handling of Superman and Lois Lane's complicated relationship, the picture is bigger and more expansive than its small-screen predecessor in almost every way. In the context of the hero's mythology, the audience gets a rare glimpse into the negative zone as well as an answer to what might happen if Clark Kent's secret identity became not so secret. As usual with Warner Bros. animated products, the fun is for the whole family, so there's plenty for young kids to delight in while watching Supes duke it out with giant robots -- and that he sure does! The only thing is that there is so much action that the story almost gets bogged down by it all. Thankfully, the animators are having such a field day with the iconic hero that it's easy to be sucked back into the awe of Superman as soon as he revs up those laser eyes of his. Exceptional voice talent is utilized for the film, most notably Lance Henriksen as Brainiac and ex-Wings-man Tim Daly as the man in tights. Somewhat heavy opposition came from the animated series' fan base with the changing of the vocal guard with the film, primarily with Powers Boothe taking over the acting duties of Lex Luthor from series regular Clancy Brown. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

3.0 out of 5 stars A good try., Aug 5 2006

This movie isn't as bad as many might lead one to believe. But it does have some bad aspects. I'll start with the good. First of all, the plot is actually quite good. It's a story worthy of Superman the animated series and it generally delivers. Secondly, Tim Daly and Dana Delany reprise their roles as Superman and Lois Lane.
Now the bad. First and most important, the writing. I really like Duane Capizzi's work on The Batman, but unfortuneatley he didn't do a good job on this movie. I think the blame can be placed on an unfamiliarity with the Bruce Timm tv series. It seems as though Capizzi hasn't seen an episode of the show. The biggest problem is the portrayal of the two villains. Luthor's characterization is similar to the mad scientist of the classic comics. Whereas this isn't necessarily bad, the Luthor in this movie is nothing like the one we saw on the show. This makes it uncomfortable for the viewer and disassociates us from the Luthor we love from the tv series. Since this movie is clearly meant to tie-in to the tv show, I feel he should have been written more like the tv Luthor. Brainiac has the same problem. He has too much personality. The cold blooded computer seems to be gone. He shows far too much emotion. Also, he constantly refers to Superman as "Son of Krypton", whereas the tv show Brainiac always calls him Kal-El. This may seem like a small, picky thing, but it is one of the little thing that disassociates this movie from the tv show. I want to make it very clear that the problems with Luthor and Brainiac have nothing to do with the voice actors themselves. Of course we miss Clancy Brown and Corey Burton. But we can't blame the problems with Luthor and Brainiac on Powers Boothe and Lance Henrikson. The writing was the problem. Just look at Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman. One hardly noticed the absences of Stockard Channing and Paul Williams respectively because the characters were written well. The voice actors aren't to blame. Another example of the poor writing is with Jimmy Olsen. He continually calls Lois, Ms. Lane, and Clark, Mr. Kent. Yes this is more true to the comics, but it is not true to the Bruce Timm series. More care should have been taken in this regard.
In closing, I enjoyed this movie despite it's problems. But, unless you're a collector like me, I don't recommend buying. Rent it and watch it expecting some problems. The movie was a good try, but some improvements need to be made if they make another one.
