In recent years i'm drawn increasingly to "music that doesn't go anywhere", as i call it -- music that simply presents itself as sound here and now instead of taking you on a developmental trip. Takemitsu is an exemplar of this kind of music, and this disc includes four fine examples of it, along with three shorter pieces taken from film scores (which are also atmospheric in a meditative way). They are not merely soothing or ambient, but invite you to deep listening without emotional indulgence. The performances by Alsop and the Bournemouth orchestra are excellent, the sound full and rich, making the most of the spacious quality of the music. Another good buy from Naxos.
