Review

G.W. Pabst's most famous film featured his first, star-making collaboration with American actress Louise Brooks in a complex exploration of sexual psychology and Weimar Germany's social decadence. Working from Frank Wedekind's play in Pabst's trademark realist style, Pabst and Brooks transformed the character of Lulu from an evil temptress into a hedonistic innocent at ease with her sexuality. Pursued by men and women alike, Lulu is prey as much to social repression as to her own insatiable desires, as she winds up blamed for the troubles that others have brought on themselves through their own sexual hypocrisy. The appearance of Jack the Ripper at the conclusion is a sign less of sensationalist melodrama than of Lulu's internalized victimization. Brooks's subtle, nuanced performance and Pabst's fluid editing style infuse Pandora's Box with a sensuality that remains undiminished to this day. Critically panned on its release, Pandora's Box has since come to be seen as a hypnotic masterwork, remarkable for its frank treatment of sexuality and the sympathetic, inscrutable, fascinating presence of Brooks, who became a Jazz Age flapper icon. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

5.0étoiles sur 5 Still fascinating today, Sep 3 2006

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
The story is timeless and still holds your attention today. I was amazed as to how modern the film is its self. Probably the best know of G.W. Pabst's works. Being a film from the silent era gives this film a collector's value; yet five minutes into viewing and you do not realize it is silent.

LuLu (Louise Brooks) an amoral entertainer in 1928 Berlin, is having fun taking men for all they have and snubbing those that may care for her. After moving to London she is still in the habit of entertaining men at her place. She is about to open Pandora's Box as she has no idea who she has lured up to her place.

If you are looking for an ending with a moral statement you will be disappointed as it is more of a Quid pro quo.

If it is not already included on the media you picked for this film there is an available separate documentary Produced in 1998 for Turner Classic Movies called "Looking for Lulu", narrated by Shirley MacLaine, which is almost as interesting as this film.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Femme fatale, Mai 11 2009
Par ES (Ottawa, ON) - Voir tous mes commentaires
An extremely well-made 1929 melodrama, with everything that the law allowed back then, and perhaps more (up to and including suit-and-tie lesbianism). It could easily have been trashy: what raises Pandora's Box to the level of a silent classic is its sexual honesty, exemplified by an utterly carnal Louise Brooks as the archetypal flapper / femme-fatale, Lulu. Every look she gives seems to say she knows more about the sexual game and what it does to people than anyone else in the room. Anyone else in the room? Anyone else ALIVE. Even the camera can't resist her.

And if that weren't enough, the sumptuous sets and costumes, the August Sander faces and lurid carryings-on convincingly bring to life the Berlin that was the vice capital of the world.

This Criterion release is, at 133 minutes, the complete, uncut Pandora's Box. Beware of shorter versions. The image has been digitally cleaned, and looks fine. The soundtrack comes with your choice of four musical accompaniments.

Also included in the package are a second disc of documentary features and an extensive booklet of photos and essays.
