You must buy this DVD if you want to understand life on an English housing estate. Dad on some kind of disability allowance, Mum working in a bakery, kids mostly shiftless and Nan just wants a glass of sherry for "medicinal purposes". Life centres on telly and petty bickering. This is the most wisely observed and witty comedy for years. The fact that nothing happens is rather the point. Absolutely priceless.

If you like British comedy this is one of the most hilarious ones ever written.
The Royles are a family of lazy slobs, apart from poor Anthony the son who has to get up and answer the phone, the door, fetch a cup of tea etc.
The father, Jim, rarely does anything other than watch TV and drink and swear, his favourite word being "arse". The ashtray is always overflowing as they chainsmoke and put the world to rights!
The wit is very funny and although the majority of the scenes are in the living room around the TV (occassionally the dinner table) it is well worth watching.
I'm surprised it took this long to get to North America and on DVD. I can't wait for Series 2 and 3.
