When one of the pub's bartenders is found murdered in the nearby woods, Barnaby and Scott unearth the gossipy village's clash of cultures, full of lies, jealousy, and deceit.

Disc 2 The Straw Woman When a curate dies tragically at a festival revival, some villagers in Midsomer Parva suspect black magic. Barnaby and Scott unravel a centuries-old mystery, complicated by Scott's attraction to a schoolteacher who has been branded a witch by the village.

Disc 3 Ghosts of Christmas Past The Villiers family has gathered to celebrate Christmas exactly nine years after Ferdy Villiers suicide. Barnaby and Scott are called to the home after a family member dies in mysterious circumstances, and find they must uncover the secrets of the past to solve the present-day crime.

A plus in this series and the earlier series 7 is the size. They're smaller. Unfortunately, I find the character of Gavin far superior to the replacement Sgt. Dan Scott. This series reveals Scott's character that was unformed in series 7 as he settled in to country life, an obviously difficult adjustment for a Londoner. It turns out Sgt. Scott is a ladies man and in each episode 'chases' one of the suspects or village women. I find I don't like him. Barnaby, his wife, Joyce and daughter, Cully remain faithful to their roles and I will miss the series but I can't make the adjustment to the new charater. He's not in my view very likable. This, of course is a matter of opinion and if you like Dan Scott in Series 7 you may like him in this series as well.

Despite the continued high quality of murder mysteries I regret buying this set and it will be my last. I liked the team of Barnaby and Gavin; I don't like the relationship between Barnaby and Scott. Since Midsomer Murders is as much about the relationships of the characters forming a subplot as it is about British murder mysteries. I regret to say the 3 stars are for the mysteries alone.
