Newly promoted Detective Chief Inspector Janine Lewis commands a close-knit police team that probes some of Manchester's most gruesome murders. And, as a single mother, she tends four children at home, handling crises that range from head lice to teenage tippling. Janine throws herself into every challenge with energy and passion-even when her professional and personal lives collide.
British Comedy Award-winner Caroline Quentin (Jonathan Creek, Men Behaving Badly) shines in this dramatic role, heading a fine ensemble cast that includes Ian Kelsey (Touching Evil) as Janine's dishy, dedicated partner and David Schofield (Gladiator) as her doubting boss. With riveting realism and a touch of wry humor, Blue Murder serves up gritty police procedurals that set your mind racing and your pulse pounding. And it sensitively explores the struggles of a thoroughly modern woman, balancing her devotion to family with the demands of her often dangerous profession.
Includes complete Series 1 and 2
DISC 1 Episode 1: Cry Me a River, Part 1 With three kids at home and one on the way, Janine earns a promotion and her first big case-the murder of Matthew Tulley, a 42-year-old teacher found nearly eviscerated in his garden plot. Ferdie Gibson, Tulley's former student with longtime grudge, seems the likeliest suspect. But Lesley, the victim's wife, arouses Janine's suspicions.
Episode 2: Cry Me a River, Part 2 Janine faces increasing pressure from her boss to conserve resources, narrow her investigation to one of three suspects, and conclude the case. But when her team turns up drug deals and homemade pornographic videos of the most violent sort, Janine insists on following the evidence and her instincts.
DISC 2 Episode 1: Hit and Run While dropping off her son Tom at school, Janine takes a call about a body fished from the river, strangled and mutilated. Seconds later, she witnesses a hit-and-run outside the school and tears off in hot pursuit. Eventually, the two crimes become linked as Janine probes the murder of an illegal immigrant who worked as a lap dancer.
Episode 2: Up in Smoke After the cremation of suicide victim Charlotte Moran, evidence suggests that a second body burned with hers in the coffin. But whose? When Charlotte's husband and a crematorium worker both go missing after the funeral, Janine and Richard try to determine which man is a murder victim and which is a killer on the lam. Episode 3: Fragile Relations
Ethnic tensions run high as Janine and her team investigate the arson death of Ali Raffiq, a young part-time mullah from the local mosque. They turn up no shortage of suspects-drug pushers whom Ali had confronted, leaders of the right-wing group One Britain, and perhaps even members of Ali's own insular Islamic community.
Episode 4: Lonely "Murder in its simplest form-one strike, one dead woman." That's how the pathologist describes the death of Diane Waugh, a pretty young child-care provider. But the crime proves anything but simple for Janine and Richard. Their sole eyewitness, an autistic boy, refuses to speak, even to his parents.
