Outstanding, really nicely put together., April 7 2008
The packaging for this set is excellent. The outer box is thick and durable, but it isn't bulky. It also looks very elegant, if you are concerned with such things. The hinges for the tray stack inside could probably be a big stronger or more substantial considering the great number of disks contained in it, but aside from having to be a bit careful with it it is not a defect.
Content and Features:
The content is as advertised, all six seasons on 13 disks, complete and unabridged. All of the "lost" episodes featuring Dave Attell and Conan Obrien are included intact, which means if you are an old school fan of the show there should still be something new to see. As for the transfers, they are a perfect compliment to such a graphically advanced and visually driven show, OH, I mean they are way better than they need to be considering how comically crude and limited the animation is. The transfers are actually first class all around, and the line quality and colour looks better than I have ever seen it, when even the most sophisticatedly animated films and shows often have trouble in this area when making a jump to DVD. The first two seasons have several commentaries, the same content exactly as the previous two single season releases. The set also has the video recording of the live stage play with the regular cast with guests like Andy Kindler and Kathy Griffin, which is all good stuff. The set also has a completely awesome 28 page quasi comic book based on the show which I wont ruin by explaining too much.
Overall:
This set is a must own, in my opinion, for any collector or aficionado of comedy, animation, animated sitcoms, or anyone who is just tired of seeing the same rehashed shows over and over again that emphasize broad, easy gags and formulas, and want to experience something that focuses on inspired intelligent writing, and is a true labour of love. This is a definitive set, and the show has as much replay value as any of my favourites. I bought season 1 on dvd a couple months before this was released, for something like 12 dollars, and found out soon after that they abandoned the single season releases. I don't know how well the single seasons were selling, but it occurs to me they easily could have released all the seasons separately and kept the series release plans hush hush, and then sprung that only when they put the last season out, not unlike another show you may be familiar with which shall go unnamed (rhymes with Einsfeld). For what it is, if you shop around a bit, the price is more than reasonable, and due to the criminally neglected state of this release, may not be long for this world. If it is destined for discontinuation, and you are waffling on it, you might want to just treat yourself a bit and save yourself the potential regrets! I'm the last one to advocate conspicuous consumption, but lets support the real arts!
